This is not the Four Seasons, so if you are looking for 5-star luxury, go to the Four Seasons. This is a cottage located on a property with 5 "houses" that share a courtyard and 2 brand new propane BBQ grills. We stayed in the yellow cottage, which is a 2 bedroom 1 bathroom plus Full kitchen, living room and great outdoor porch, 2 tandem parking stalls. I don't know what some of the earlier reviews were talking about because our house had a hair dryer, towels, linens, coffee pot, pans, cooking utensils, night lights, I can't think of one thing it was missing except A/C. There is no A/C, and yes there are bugs, some of them fly and some of them bite, especially at night. You are in Hawaii on the beach, and that's where they live. In fact, you will probably see a bunch living creatures while you stay...including chickens, cats, maybe fish, turtles, and if you're lucky even whales.||Nobody is on the beach in front, so you practically have a private beach. This is what I imagine Hawaii was like before tourism took over the island. If you get to experience this, count yourself lucky. ||This is exactly what we needed. We needed to get away and relax, away from traffic, crowds, and get back to nature. At night it's so dark you can see the stars. You are next to Dillingham airfield so you will get airplane noise when they take off and land. You can see the guys jumping out of planes right above you as they parachute down. There's a polo field nearby that does horseback rides, and Haleiwa is a 10-15 min drive away. Kaena Point is just a few minutes past this place. ||There is an...
Read moreWe stayed for 4 nights (yellow house). North Shore O'ahu is a great place to visit and contrasts the touristy feel of Waikiki. The location of Owen's Retreat is awesome - having the beach just a few steps from the door is an amazing experience. In all, it felt too expensive for the quality of the property.
There are a few things that could be improved to make this a 5-star experience: There are some essentials and niceties that are missing (e.g., coffee, shower mat, extra towels, water filter) It would be great if snorkel and beach equipment like chairs were provided Despite the steep price for staying here, guests are expected to clean the premises prior to leaving (including sweeping any and all sand that was tracked in) The furniture arrangement is just not all that comfortable, and most things are mismatched
Additionally, I want to provide some information that future guests may find useful: There is no AC and only 1 (small) fan. It's very humid and warm during the day and early evenings An airport is located across the road and the road is right next to the property. Vehicles and planes can be quite loud There are wild chickens everywhere and they will wake you up starting around 5am. Bring ear plugs The bathroom is small with little counter space. This was fine for just us ( a couple) but I imagine this might be a problem with a larger group
All that said, we loved staying here and making it a home base to explore the...
Read moreOwens retreat is so much more than just a vacation destination, it is a place for families, friends, and new memories. The White House is by far my favorite of the bunch, the second story and the huge front porch provide beautiful views of the beach (sunrise and sunset). The beach in front of the white house is also very secluded and at times almost feels private. One of my favorite locations is a small cove located to the left of the homes, this small cove provides shallow clear water for those who aren't the biggest fan of snorkeling. This can also be a great place for little kids who are still nervous about getting in the water. One of the coolest things about this place is that every day from around 10am-7pm there will be at least 2-3 sea turtles eating away at the vegetation right on the reef. (pictured)||||The location of the house is also very convenient for the adventurer, there are hiking trails 5-10 minutes away, surfing, fishing, and snorkeling steps away from the front porch, and in the evening you can also go out crab hunting/ eel hunting around the reef. ||||If you are more into shopping and tourist destinations there is iconic Haleiwa right around the corner featuring famous destinations like Matsumoto's Shave Ice, the Haliewa Bridge, San Lorenzo bikini shop, and plenty of Surf Shops. ||||Overall, this is the place I recommend to all my friends and family and we are yet to have a person who doesn't absolutely love...
