Unfortunately I cannot recommend. The photos on the website are extremely deceiving so don't think your room will look like the one you book online. I booked our Mountain View Suite about 9 months in advance, during Covid. I had my choice of ANY room at the resort and picked the one I did, which was quite pricey, because I loved the room layout advertised on the website and the views of the mountains. Since our 10 year anniversary trip had been cancelled last year due to Covid, we were instead celebrating our 11 year anniversary, so I chose the room with that in mind. What we got was nothing NEAR what the website showed. In fact, I was certain they accidentally assigned us the wrong room. When I went to the front desk to ask about the mix up, I was told we did in fact get the correct room. Still confused, I told them it was nothing - NOTHING - like what the website showed. I was told they don't put the photos on the website (okay, but you are well aware they are bait and switch nonetheless) and that they could not move me to another room because they were booked out. The room was extremely dimly lit, had very bizarre decor, and basically just overlooked the roof of the rooms that overlook the bay with some view of the trees and the canal. Had I known this would be the view I was paying for, I would have booked one of the suites that overlooked the bay so we could at least have the romantic view and privacy I thought I had booked. Also, where our room entrance was located, we had to walk down a LONG and STEEP driveway to even get to the steps that go back up to the room. I mean you have to actually be PHYSICALLY FIT to be able to walk down the driveway and back up the stairs to get into the room, and trekking back up the driveway is scary when cars suddenly come down from the top of it. (There is no sidewalk, you HAVE to walk in the road.) There is a way to park at the bottom of the driveway for the room parking (aside from the limited parking spaces) except after it rained, we witnessed TWO cars that could not make it back up the driveway while it was wet because it was too steep! After that we were concerned our car would be stuck at the bottom if it continues to rain, so we had no choice but to park at the top of the hill and walk down to our room. Another thing we were looking forward to after competing in tough some races at Kualoa Ranch was the hot tub, but it was lukewarm at best and borderline cold. Other people we met at the pool complained of the same thing and so we couldn't really even use it. On one morning when we were trying to get ready for a big race, the electricity went out. We were up early so it was still dark outside. So that's right, we had to get ready in the DARK. It sucked. When we came back later that evening, it was back on, thank goodness. But it was a huge inconvenience and literally felt like we were camping. There is a laundry facility on site, which is very convenient when you can grab one to use. There are two washer and two dryers. Be sure to bring quarters, it was $5 to do a wash/dry. They can also make change at the front desk if you forget quarters. Also - like others have mentioned on here, there are roosters that wake everyone up at 5:30 am each day. Not that it's the fault of the resort that there are wild birds singing before the sun comes up, but something you should be aware of. If you like to sleep in, this is not the place for you. I wouldn't really call this place a "resort", at least during Covid. The canoe rentals were booked out and the food services were closed. It's just a way for them to charge extra for using the pool and parking lot. The reason I gave it 2 stars vs 1 star? It is a decently clean, quiet, and tucked away place. It seems pretty well-kept, at least on the exterior. The grounds are calm and peaceful. The views are beautiful out onto the bay, so if you plan to book here and are coming for the views, I would recommend booking one of those rooms. *SEE...
Read moreFirstly, the staff was always very friendly, helpful, and attentive through many issues. This is in no way a resort, though. Management cuts corners constantly. I would even say calling it a resort is dishonest. The pictures on the website are deceiving. It's beautiful and well kept on the outside, but the inside feels like a slightly better version of a motel. I'll break it down by area: We had to ask for toilet paper on 4 separate occasions before finally receiving some on the 4th try. After that initial struggle, they always brought it quickly, but running out of toilet paper should never have been a concern at a resort. They don't do maid service and say it's due to Covid. In lieu of this, no cleaning supplies were provided, not even a toilet brush. We had to buy our own cleaning supplies to keep things tidy. Other hotels offer maid service, so I think they're using Covid as an excuse to cut corners. The WiFi is low quality and internet connection fades in and out constantly. Living room: The walls are bare in all rooms - not one piece of decor to provide ambiance or a vacation feel. Not even a single cheap painting, just sage green walls with gray curtains. The "sofa" is actually 2 outdoor patio chairs pushed together. No pillows. The cable box is haphazardly balanced on top of the TV. The rooms are kind of depressing and bare. Not words you associate with a resort. Kitchenette: Since we had a long stay, I brought my own coffee. I went to make coffee our first morning and there was a coffee maker, but no filters. I've been to cheap motels that provide coffee filters. We tried a complimentary packet of coffee with a built in filter. What came out was a pale brown liquid that tasted like burnt plastic. I tried again and it still tasted like burnt plastic. To their credit they did bring a new one quickly, but still no filters as they don't have them. Filters are not too much to ask for at a resort. The toaster was unusable and smelled like burning metal within 5 seconds. Next I went to make breakfast and found there was only 1 fork. 9 spoons and 1 fork for 2 people. Clearly attention to detail isn't paid before opening the room to a new guest. The microwave is atop a piece of particle board over the sink that is bending in the middle. It looks ready to collapse at any minute. The coldest setting of the mini fridge was just below room temp and made our groceries go bad, so we had to go out and buy more groceries. To their credit they did buy a new fridge, but the fact that it even had to be done shows they're not maintaining their appliances and don't quality check before renting a room. The bedroom: The fan/light in the bedroom only has one setting - fan and light both on or both off. There is no way to have the fan on without the light and vice versa. The chain is broken and doesn't adjust anything. There is no comforter, just a sheet and thin "blanket". We realized the "blanket" was actually a hollow duvet cover. I asked for a real comforter and was told they don't have any, and that their standard is empty duvet covers and they don't even own a comforter. One of the things people look forward to at hotels is the notoriously fluffy comforters but I guess that was another cut corner. Old, loud AC unit. No waste basket provided. Smoke alarm has been removed. The bathroom: Badly rusted hinges on the doors. No bathtub, only a shower. To be fair the shower is a very nice design with beautiful stonework, however forget taking a shower longer than 10 minutes as the hot water runs out quickly. Incredible that you can't have a long hot bath or shower at a place called Paradise Bay Resort. Again, the staff was great. The issue is that these problems shouldn't have even been problems. Bottom line is this place is in no way a resort. The owners should drop resort from the name, or if they don't have the decency to call their establishment what it is, they should sell it to someone who can afford to...
Read moreWe booked 8 night stay at Paradise Bay Resort but could not bare to stay there after 3 nights and ended up checking out early by moving to a different hotel. Details for those who are looking to stay here.
On their website this place looks like a beautiful resort in a secluded place with a private view of the surrounding bay and ocean. That is partially true but what they don’t tell you are the following:
This place isn’t really a resort. It is located in residential area with wild roosters all around you. They may seem cute until they start crowing outside your window at 6:50 AM everyday
Website photos can be professionally touched up that I understand but they probably chose the best/only room to showcase. Rooms are very dated with the walls paper thin. I was following the entire conversation between a couple next door while taking a morning shower (will get back to shower later)
The beds are no more than mattress on box spring and definitely not what you would expect from a resort
Closets either don’t have doors or the doors fall off the moment you touch them and I had to take photos just to make sure I can show that I didn’t break those
Other amenities that one would expect to have in a resort or those they advertise in their website technically exist but are so difficult to reserve that they might as well be considered non-existent. We tried to book kayak right away and they were all booked. We later found out there were only a handful of kayaks available for a large “resort” that boasts about its amenities
What broke the camel’s back and made us check out after 3 nights stay instead of staying there for the full 8 nights was the shower. The hot water tank serving each building is insufficient to provide adequate hot water when more than a couple of people are taking shower. As a result when you take shower the hot water pressure and flow rate were so low that it was hard to have a comfortable hot water shower. We initially thought it was unexpected and requested maintenance work but it didn’t change. We then called the phone number on our confirmation email to reach the general manager (or someone in charge) but we were told that “the building is from the 50s and there is nothing we could do. Try not have shower at the same time as others since they also have this problem” The bad attitude we got on the phone was enough to make us book 5 nights of stay with Hilton on Waikiki, where we stayed last time, right after the GM hung up on us
When you drop $2400 for a 8 night stay ($208 weekdays, $298 weekends + mandatory “resort fee” + parking fee) you have certain expectations, even in Hawaii where the price maybe jacked up. When we made our reservation months ago we chose this place because of what was shown and sold to us on their website as well as wanting to support smaller businesses instead of big corporations. The experience we had made us regret our decision
BTW, our price was for the smallest studio but we were supposedly “upgraded” to a 2 bedroom suite. While checking other reviews across various different sites it seemed a few others got “upgraded” too. I wonder what a studio room actually looks like
Different people value things differently. We do not feel we are getting our money’s worth at this place and the experience was bad enough for us to cut our scheduled stay short knowing we might not even get a partial refund. If you find what I described above not a big issue for you then you should stay. The view on the floating dock is great and it is away from the...
