Part of the Thousand Trails network of campgrounds. This place is LARGE... with multiple camping zones, that will appeal to just about anyone (large sites in the tall open trees; sites nestled in shorter wooded areas; large open areas for those who like to view the open sky or zero in with that satellite dish; and even valley and hilltop camping). The fact that Acton is located right around the mountain from the greater Los Angeles area makes this a good home base for other attractions in the area. This park has seen a lot of upgrades and improvements since my last visit -- they have a new reception area, newly renovated Adult Lodge, etc. There are still a large number of spots that don't have electric working, but thankfully they've marked those spots to make them easy to spot (it's very frustrating pulling into a spot, starting to get set up, and then realize you have no power). I'm sure re-working the electric is on their list of things to improve with the park... and electric work is nothing to skimp on, so I'll leave it at that. We've NEVER had ANY issue finding a spot in an area we wanted to camp. During the summer this place gets busy -- with a LOT of kids. Opposite the Adult Lodge is the Family Lodge (opposite side of the park) with one of the largest swimming pools in southern California. The pool is HUGE. There is also a splash pad area (concrete floor) for the kids, a small playground area, large mini-golf course, plenty of woods, trails, and other natural wonders to keep you occupied. There is a small store if you run out of things and need a quick re-stock. Internet here can be tricky. They've FINALLY upgraded the WiFi to pay-as-you-go. While people may not like the idea of paying a service provider for internet, let me tell you that professional installations of internet are not cheap, and the "free" consumer-grade internet they had in the past never worked (they rarely do)... so, you can either complain about having to pay for the internet that you use, at a very reasonable rate, and actually be able to use it -- or you can complain about how the free WiFi never seems to work. For the rest of us, the minimal fee for WiFi is inexpensive and it's nice to know that you can now get reliable internet when you need it. If your only goal is to check eMail here or there during your stay you'll be happy to know that you get 15 minutes of free WiFi, which might be plenty. For those of us who rely on cellular for internet connectivity -- you'll need to park in the big-rig section "up on the hill" in Section N. This is the best, and only reliable, place to get signals from Verizon, AT&T, and Sprint. T-Mobile can work (to make calls) from a couple other points in the park -- but it's extremely limited. If you have to make an important call on T-Mobile I would suggest leaving the park and heading a mile up the road towards Acton. AT&T and Sprint work in a couple other SMALL areas of the park. So, stick with Section N if you need cellular DATA and you'll be fine. Otherwise, I love the park and the...
Read moreAs full-time RVers, we've seen our fair share of campgrounds. Unfortunately, our first experience with Thousand Trails at Soledad Canyon, CA was a disaster. Despite the many negative stories we'd heard, we decided to give them a chance, lured by the promise of full hookups and the opportunity to camp near friends for two weeks. What we encountered was a stark contrast to the advertised experience.
From the outset, the staff exhibited a shocking lack of customer service. One individual was rude and bossy, explicitly stating they were "too busy" to assist us. This set a negative tone for our entire stay.
Our initial site assignment was in an "overflow" section, situated directly beside the noisy train tracks. When we requested a different location, we were incredibly told that only tent sites were available, despite the campground boasting 854 sites. After driving through the entire park ourselves, we identified a tent site and returned to the office to register it.
Upon arriving at our chosen site, we discovered the pedestal was non-operational. Only the green pedestals worked, a crucial piece of information that was never communicated to us. To add insult to injury, despite only having water and electric hookups, we were charged the same rate as those with full services. This policy feels exploitative and unfair.
The condition of the park is deeply concerning. It's evident that maintenance is struggling, and only select tasks are being addressed. Trash was rampant, with dirty socks, beer bottles, and general debris littering the grounds. The dog run was also closed indefinitely, contributing to the dog waste scattered throughout the park.
Security is a significant issue. We encountered several "shady characters," and during a walk with our dogs, an individual at a tent site aggressively yelled obscenities at us, making us feel unsafe.
Adding to the frustration, the advertised veteran discount was not honored at the park level. We were bounced between the office and HQ, with each claiming the other was responsible for applying the discount. This lack of coordination and disregard for veterans is unacceptable.
The facilities are dilapidated, and the staff's attitude is appalling. This was, without a doubt, the worst campground experience we've had in at least three years. The blatant disregard for customer service, the poor maintenance, and the security concerns make Thousand Trails Soledad Canyon a place to avoid at all costs.
Furthermore, both campers and staff were observed using the tent camping section as a speedway, bypassing speed bumps and creating a dangerous environment. This blatant disregard for safety is another indictment of the park's management.
Based on our experience, we cannot recommend Thousand Trails. The broken promises, poor facilities, rude staff, and security concerns far outweigh any potential benefits. Full-time RVers and weekend campers alike should look elsewhere for a more pleasant and safe...
Read moreOH MAN. Let me tell you about THIS PLACE. Went online and booked full hookups for three nights. Three hours into our 5 hour drive they called to ask what time we would get there. We tell them GPS says about 8pm. They tell us "Oh you may have to just sleep in the parking lot then because we don't stay past 7:30" this should have been our first sign. We were pretty upset at this, to think we'd have to sleep in a parking lot when we made a reservation and had a long drive. We said noone told us we can't check in past 7:30, to which they replied "Oh yeah, we don't usually tell people." LIKE WHAT? WHY? WHY WOULDN'T YOU COMMUNICATE THIS? guess we got "lucky" bc someone stayed until 8. Now get this, we call an hour out to make sure we can get in and THIS IS WHEN THEY DECIDE TO TELL US "Just so you know, you probably won't get a site with electric because they're first come first serve" WELL WHY THE HELL DID THEY WAIT TO TELL US THIS? They can see in the reservation we have a Camper not a tent. We also listed TWO dogs. It's 100+ degree weather here. Our dogs will DIE without AC in a place like this. They know this, just don't care.
So this place doesn't track what sites are and aren't available so after a 5 hour drive we had to look for full hookups in the complete darkness for another hour and a half with a map that's terrible and makes no sense. Guess what? There weren't any and over half the sites are unavailable because of power issues or construction. They knew we would not have a spot but decided that was our problem. No staff helped us look for a spot either. Lazy, and no concern for guests. Apparently the few sites left have power or water issues anyway, so even if you find one if you wanna go explore out of the park your power can short and kill your dogs. Look at the reviews. This was the worst experience of our lives and we have stayed at 20 other Thousand Trails all over the country. We booked at Hollywood RV resort and are leaving here early. I can't believe a place is run this way. STAY AWAY. I can't imagine family's who pay good moneya head of time to experience this. We were lucky nights are cooler here so we were able to sleep with no hookups through the night in a tent site before we leave early this morning. Please consider this a warning since they won't tell you until arrival that this is the situation. Why have the option to book full hookups? They acted like it was our fault for not knowing.
Side note: no cell service, loud train that runs every hour through all...
