We just stayed at the Poland Spring Resort "Lodge" for 3 nights over Labor Day weekend. I booked through Expedia and I specifically chose the Lodge "deluxe suite" because of the photo of the room, which showed a fairly spacious looking room with a queen bed that had a dining table with two chairs and a sofa and was described as having a golf course view, which I thought would be perfect for us. After we checked in and were given our room key, we proceeded to our room, which was on the second floor at the end of a long, dark hallway. The entire place is so run down, dismal, and in desperate need of updating. Don't get me wrong, we knew beforehand that this resort is very old and historic and we were NOT expecting a 5-star experience by any means, but we certainly were not expecting this level of dreariness. It felt more like a hostel or a cheap roadside motel and was very gloomy. The door on our room was so old that it had trouble opening and closing. You had to force it shut and really pull on it to open it as the latch would stick. The key also had a difficult time turning, probably from the lock being so worn and dated. We guessed that the door was likely from the 1960s, possibly even older.
Upon entering our room, I could immediately tell that the room we were given was NOT the room that was pictured on Expedia, not even close. It was significantly smaller, did not have the dining table and chairs, nor the sofa. The bed took up a majority of the room and we constantly had to navigate around it, which was a huge pain. There was hardly any room for us and our dogs to move around and we were constantly tripping over each other. We travel A LOT and this is the very first place we've stayed that didn't even have a coffee maker in the room! You have to walk downstairs to get coffee in the main lobby, and the coffee was not that great. We didn't even have a view of the golf course. Instead, we were directly facing the parking lot and the road. From our bathroom window, we had a lovely view of the dumpster. NOT exactly romantic or cozy. It was also quite loud at night as we could hear the people in the nearby rooms, so there is obviously no sound barrier at all between the rooms.
The bathroom was the size of a shoe box and the shower was terrible. There was no shower head, just a little spicket, and hardly any water pressure. My gym has nicer showers than this! It also took a good 10 minutes for the water to really heat up. I feel like we grossly overpaid for the room that we received and the photo on Expedia is a blatant misrepresentation of the rooms at the Lodge, at least the room we were in.
As far the actual resort grounds, they are beautiful, and we did enjoy the pool and Mel's Hilltop Restaurant, where we had late lunch/dinner and drinks each day we were there. That is the only reason for my 2-star rating instead of 1-star. However, based on our overall experience and not receiving the deluxe room that we paid for and thought we were getting, we will not be booking here again and would definitely not recommend the Lodge. Both my boyfriend and I were very disappointed and frustrated with our experience. Maybe their other buildings/accommodations are better, but the Lodge was downright terrible and I would avoid it...

Read moreI want to start by saying that the staff is absolutely remarkable. Everyone we encountered was kind, helpful, and genuinely a pleasure to interact with.||Pros:|-The staff is phenomenal and really made our stay enjoyable.|-There’s something for everyone here, and we loved that our dog was welcome on the property.|-We were attending a wedding, and the entire event was excellent. The food was delicious, and again—the staff went above and beyond.|-The Maine Inn, where we stayed, was very clean.||Cons:|-The rooms are extremely outdated—not just in style, but in comfort and functionality. We had a double mountain-view room on the first floor, and it had a strong musty smell.|-Only one outlet by the bed, which is difficult when traveling with multiple people and devices.|-The hallway doors are thin, hollow, and let in every sound and light from outside. There’s a large gap at the bottom that made the room bright at night (we had to block it with a towel). Honestly, we were surprised these doors are still in use, as they don’t seem like they would meet modern fire code standards.|- Only one set of pillows per bed, which is unusual compared to other hotels we’ve stayed at.|- Bathroom fixtures feel straight out of the 70s, with visible rust and an old tub stopper. Hard to control the water in the shower and the water temp would fluctuate between cold and mildly warm throughout the showering process.|- The walls are paper thin. Our first night was sleepless due to hearing arguments, children running in the halls, and footsteps above us. Night 2 we had to blast a sound machine and the AC in order to get some R&R.|- No iron or ironing board in the room, which made preparing for a wedding difficult.|- Parking is a bit inconvenient—quite a walk if you forget something in your car.|- Breakfast buffet was disappointing: the eggs were overcooked and crusty, the French toast was cold and chewy. Honestly, don’t pay for it—there’s a Dunkin’ just down the road that’s a better option.||Overall:|The property has so much potential, and the charm of the old-school style could definitely be preserved while making some much-needed updates. For a wedding venue especially, guest comfort and rest should be a top priority. The staff made the experience wonderful, but the accommodations...
