Returned home yesterday afternoon after a Blackhills visit centered around a three night stay at the Canyon Lake Resort - we could not have been more pleased with our choice. We are retired and getting up there in years. We chose to visit after Labor Day knowing that all things would be dialed back quite a bit and we were not disappointed. We'd booked a two bedroom cabin knowing we'd have additional space and for us that was a good choice. Some have used 'dated' to describe this resort, but that's a bit harsh in my opinion. Yes, some of the buildings clearly cannot pretend to be modern in the current sense, but they are very well maintained and spotlessly clean. Our cabin had everything we needed and nothing we didn't. Furnishings are simple, but adequate and you'll find nothing pretentious. These are not B&Bs or Condos, they're places for families and friends to hangout after a day of exploring the 'Hills'. We enjoyed a newer gas grill and picnic table, along with a great fire pit area that's completely stocked with split wood and everything you'd need to get things going. The whole is surrounded by wonderful and nearly new composite Adirondack chairs - very comfortable. The resort grounds are well kept and the entire setting has a nice laid-back feel. The lake itself is very pretty and under normal circumstances the resort provides a small fleet of pedal boats free for guest use. Unfortunately the lake was closed during our stay because it was needed to fight an ongoing forest fire that was not too far away.at, but not least, the entire staff is friendly, accommodating and easy going, just regular folks you could have a pleasant conversation with. I'm an older guy and I'm kinda fussy about too many things, but I really liked our stay at Canyon Lake Resort. Unfortunately I doubt we'll ever be going back because life is getting short and there's still much we'd like to see. But if we did, Canyon Lake is where'd we'd stay...
Read moreWe had a fabulous stay (Aug 19-26, 2023) at Canyon Lake Resort! We rented both levels of the main lodge, and used all 9 bedrooms. There were 30 of us, so some of the overflow stayed in the nearby cabins. It all worked out perfectly. We had reserved the lodge a year ago for a family reunion. As it turned out, my dad passed away, and we were all together for his services at a nearby church. We used the gathering area off the kitchen (with the large television) to set out family albums and portraits. We called it our ‘memory room,’ and used the television to hook up to a laptop to display a slideshow of pictures. The lodge was sparkling clean. It’s spacious, and well-suited to gathering in large or small groups. We used the extra tables and chairs provided, and had enough seating for meals for all of us on the main floor. The second-floor full kitchen came in very handy. The outdoor space was nicely appointed and well-used every evening, with all of us spread out around the fire pit. The field between the lodge and the lake was big enough for spur-of-the-moment football or soccer games. I’d lived in Rapid City previously, and had no idea the lake was so well-used! We never felt it was crowded or noisy, but it was lovely to see all the people walking, jogging, or biking the paths; kayaks launched; and paddle boats chugging merrily along. Many among us were fishermen. There’s a nice spot at the mouth, where the creek runs into the lake, and they caught some nice brown- and rainbow trout. Yum! I went out on my kayak several times, and enjoyed the peaceful, beautiful serenity of Canyon Lake. Deb was amazing! It seemed she was always everywhere, always available, and always helpful – and always so friendly! Same with Dave. Thank you, Canyon Lake Resort, for a...
Read moreVery beautiful area. Great location. Nice because you're on the end of town but still close enough to town. Reasonably priced. It was quiet. Peaceful. The staff are very friendly and helpful. Walking trail. Free paddle boat rides. Small pool (they supply towels) w/ comfortable seating. You can relax w/ a drink/snacks while the kids swim. We stayed in a 2 bedroom cabin. Like a small apartment. Large fridge, small gas stove, microwave, dishes, dish soap, towels, fully furnished. Now...I hate to sound negative or picky, but I do have to say the inside of the cabin is very dated. Carpet is stained. Furniture seemed old. It was clean but as I looked closer I found crumbs along the wall, a band-aid in our bedroom on the floor that wasn't ours, and a small bar of used soap left in the shower from previous people. Gross! There is an air conditioning unit in the living room so the bedrooms can get just a lil stuffy. You have your own propane grill (we didn't take advantage of this unfortunately), your own picnic table, 2 chairs (our neighbors brought their own & looked comfy/relaxed). It really is a nice resort aside from my complaints about the cleanliness and it being very dated. We really weren't in the cabin much as we were out site seeing & taking advantage of all the cool things to do in Rapid City &...
