We stayed in the train cars (Caboose Village), multiple families in 5 of the trains. There is so much potential, but it just missed the mark in a few areas. We had a great time, but want others to be aware before they go. If you view it as an extremely expensive campground, it’s great.
For reference: We booked this area because it had AC, activities & WiFi for one of the group members that needed to work. They had to drive to another town in order to work.
We would love to see this place pick it up just a bit, because then it would be awesome.
Pros: -The trains are fun and unique -The river access is next to the trains -Easy day trip to Bryce Canyon -Great for a weekend family reunion -Interesting geography/pretty desert area -Rafting, tubing, disc golf, zip lines, etc within 5 minutes -The bigger beds were comfy -The lawn area is nice -There are fire pits, outdoor chairs, working tvs with satellite dishes -The river is right next to the trains (just be cautious with young children! We swam in the river and the current is swift.) -Staff was nice
Cons: -The cost vs quality (cost would be reasonable if the areas below were fixed) -The advertised AC was NOT up to expectations. 1 train’s AC NEVER worked properly, despite maintenance working on it. Most ACs only cooled the living room/kitchen moderately. Most did not cool the bedrooms. One of the trains stayed in the 90’s during the day. Ours was slightly less unpleasant in the bedroom, but not by much. -There is no cell service. -The WiFi was a joke: it didn’t work for most of our party for the first day and a half. It worked a bit better for the last day and a half, but only in very specific spots —and even then the speeds remind me of the days when we got 1 megabyte up and down. Don’t plan on ANY WiFi just to be safe. -Parts of the trains were cleaned okay, but the rest was pretty bad: dried food left on some utensils, mouse poo in silverware drawers, dirty windows, fridge that was not cleaned, some doors and moldings were grimy, coffee pot looked like it was cleaned with dirty rags. Exterior garbage was overflowing when we arrived for one of the trains. -Only 1 kitchen garbage sack provided unless you ask for a second. -Really hit or miss with the kitchen supplies. Some units were stocked okay, others had nearly nothing. -Oven (if you dare use it) needs to be turned way up. -Really thin & short mattresses on the bunk beds. -We had about 1/4th inch of toilet paper for 3 days! We had to drive to the store to request more because of no WiFi or cell coverage.
Recommendations: -Please add a small AC unit in the bedrooms -Give an extra roll of toilet paper & an extra garbage sack -Please review standards of cleanliness with your cleaning staff. -Standardize the supplies in the kitchen with labels for each item (so that they don’t get mixed up when multiple families stay). -It’s okay if WiFi isn’t great, but please advertise that it is “basic” WiFi only.
We would love to see this place thrive. It truly is a fun place to go. Just needs a bit...
Read moreWe booked into this 'resort' for a couple of days as we were on a road trip from Arizona to Utah and thought staying in the ‘Caboose Village’ might be a nice experience and a change from hotels and motels.|We booked the California Zephyr carriage which was big enough for four adults (two senior couples). The advertising blurb described it as being ‘luxuriously furnished' whereas in reality it was mostly local thrift shop furniture.|It was also described as being fully kitted out but found to our dismay that didn’t include personal soap or body wash.|Given it would accommodate up to ten people (there are two bedrooms each with a queen size bed, two double bunk beds and one foldout sofa bed in the 'lounge' area) the amount of cutlery and crockery provided would mean that meals would need to be provided in shifts (there was only one dessert spoon).|On arrival, after a long drive, we sat down to catchup with the news on the large flatscreen television. However after much trying it was evident that the tv wasn’t working. Actually that’s not strictly correct as it was the reception that wasn’t working. Having eventually identified that the satellite receiver box wasn’t actually connected to power this was rectified and a receiver setup initiated. The feedback was that the box was not connected to the satellite dish so wouldn’t be able to work. No problem, smart tv, we'll stream some tv. There’s no WIFI. Actually, not strictly true, there is wifi adjacent to car number 12, but nowhere near car 2, so no tv streaming.|Notices in the car from the management make great play on their environmental credentials, saying there would be no in-stay housekeeping. However, it looked like there had been no housekeeping for the entire summer, as parts of the car were absolutely filthy; the cooker and oven were especially filthy and not fit to do any cooking on (a bit of a pain as the nearest restaurants open at the end of September are located several miles away in Richfield).|So what were the good points? Well the bed linen was clean as was the bath towels, and there were sufficient provided. The 'resort' is located in a beautiful location, close to the mountains where off-road trails are plentiful for ATV riding.|The young lady in reception was very friendly and apologetic when the issues were presented to her, but in reality she didn’t manage to get anything resolved.|One final comment. The resort is in a location where there is NO cellphone reception. Add to that there is no landline or pay phone available, and that reception closes at around 8pm. In the event of an emergency, eg medical or fire, it would be very difficult to call for assistance. This has obviously not been considered by the management and should be addressed as a...
Read moreWe stayed at Big Rock Candy Mountain Resort in one of the train car units in October, and it was easily one of the most disappointing lodging experiences we’ve ever had — especially for the price (nearly $800 for three nights). ||From the moment we walked in, it was obvious the unit hadn’t been properly cleaned or maintained in a long time. There was thick dust buildup, cobwebs in corners and on light fixtures, and visible grime on multiple surfaces — even the inside of the front door. We found a dirty sock on the floor and an empty tissue box shoved under the TV. The bed frame was broken, kitchen countertop was broken with large amounts of grout missing, several lamps didn’t work, and overall, the train car felt run-down and neglected. ||It wasn’t just the unit. The entire property looked uncared for. The sprinklers outside our window pounded against the glass at 2 a.m., waking us up and forcing us to go outside in the dark to fix them ourselves. The convenience store was rundown, the soda fountain machine didn’t work, and there was no coffee so we had to drive 10 miles each morning just to get coffee. There is NO restaurant on site. They sell gas station nachos and hotdogs. They advertise Starlink satellite internet but there are only hotspots around the property. ||I reported the state of the unit to staff upon checkout and followed up with photos afterward. Instead of taking responsibility, management chose to minimize our experience and referenced a supposed “strict no refund policy” that doesn’t appear anywhere on their website or in the confirmation email. When the owners finally responded, they brushed off everything as a matter of “personal standards” and stated "after reviewing all the facts in the situation, a 10% refund seems appropriate, if not generous". ||The resort is now under new management, and it shows. The focus seems to be entirely on increasing revenue, not maintaining the property or caring for guests. The way they’ve handled our situation — dodging responsibility, minimizing our experience, and inventing policies to avoid accountability — says everything about their priorities.|For a place that advertises itself as a “resort,” the experience was anything but. The property is in disrepair, the cleanliness is unacceptable, and the management clearly cares more about money than the people spending it.||Save yourself the disappointment — this place is not worth your time or your money. The photos I’ve attached speak...
