I was disappointed with this campground. The site is beautiful and it's really cool sleeping there at the base of the dam. Pros: Nice grassy sites for tents, has bathhouse, inexpensive, pool and other amenities at Fontana village included in price. Cons: Not patrolled, small bathhouse, cars driving through at night, over-grown vegetation on sides of road coming into campground, no WiFi, no cell service, no grills.
The sites are supposed to have fire pits at each one. Ours was basically a big mound of dirt, which made it impossible to seat around and enjoy. We really wanted to grill some burgers, but no grill and we didn't bring our own.
I was able to connect to WiFi at the bathhouse, but the unit wasn't connected to the Internet, so we had to go up to the lobby if we needed the Internet. There isn't any service if you have Verizon or AT&T, so most people will need to use the WiFi to keep up with things.
The bath house was clean, but there is only a urinal, one commode, and one shower (on men's side). There was almost always a line.
My big complaint was that it is not patrolled and is open to the public. Being at the base of the dam there are a lot of people that try to drive to see the dam up close. There are two roads that go towards the dam. One goes to the campground and the other to the dam. We had people ride through at all hours of the night and wake us up. I assume they took the wrong road.
The vegetation (weeds) on the sides of the road going in are so high that it creates blind curves on the way in. We had a car speed out while we were there and it was going too fast. It ended up colliding with a truck coming in and they had to airlift the two in the car to the hospital. They both survived. It was the driver's fault, but the sides of the road should be bush hogged to prevent unnecessary blind spots. I'm sure he would have slowed down had he seen the truck coming.
They could do a lot to make these camp sites a lot better. Hopefully it will get some attention soon. At this time there are better places nearby for the same price. Check out the places in Stecoah that are marketed towards motorcycles. They allow tent camping too for about...
Read moreA good campsite in a really interesting location. It was cool to be able to see the dam at night, and see how they controlled the water level on the river. No real way to get down to the river for anything as the bank is just huge rocks piled up. There are a bunch of RV sites with hookups, but we were tent camping in the middle of the field. There are a couple of tent sites with more shade by the forest but they were taken. Every site has a nice stone table and pad, no grill. When we were there everyone was quiet and keeping to themselves. We didn't see employees the whole time we were there. We also got to go in to the resort and use their pool. They have mini golf, disc golf, and a couple other things also included. I wouldn't stay at the resort itself as it looked outdated and they were always playing creepy religious music in the lobby, but the staff were nice. The only complaint I have is the bathhouse. It is small and dimly lit and not cleaned well. Spiders and cobwebs and bugs everywhere. The shower had so many bugs and holes in the wall, I...
Read moreMy wife and I camped here for a week a couple years ago. The campground is nothing special with your basic tent and hook-up sights for campers. There is one bathroom with two shower stalls (one for mens and one for womens) and the bathrooms were, with one exception, "cleaned" daily. We stayed in August and during the week the campground had hardly anyone in it but on Friday night they packed the people in. We barely got any sleep because of the noise. Our major beef was that the campground wasn't patrolled at all by security. We had people pull up in their beat-up cars, drink themselves into a stupor, and pass out on the grass and then just leave the next morning with that campsite filled with trash. Our strangest moment was when we got back one evening two rough looking men were hanging outside the bathhouse smoking. They just stared at us the whole time we were there. When they eventually drove off, they circled back through the campground 3 more times before eventually leaving. We almost packed up our stuff and headed...
