This was our first time visiting. The roads and sites were recently re-paved. Nice, smooth, level sites BUT several of the lakefront sites had one foot high sloped drop off on the sides. Some were shaded, some not, with good spacing between. This is a typical Texas state park with amenities from water-only and water & electric sites and boat ramp lake access. A lot of the park is set up to accommodate equestrian use with a dedicated equestrian camping area (sites 1 -10), the Bent Tree Loop (sites 21 - 40) which has horse pens dispersed near the sites, and miles of trails with dispersed equestrian sites that interconnect with the other Lake Somerville SP campgrounds but some of the trail bridges are closed, making the trail system incomplete at the moment. The Cedar Creek camping loop is a solely for tent or RV camping without any equestrian pens with sites 44 - 52 being directly on the lake front. Check in was quick and easy. Park rangers drove through a couple times each day and the park host was incredibly friendly and helpful. Great cellular service (AT&T). We stayed four nights. Trails were great for both hiking and biking. Warning, lots of snakes. Our friend's dog was bitten by a copperhead while walking the Cedar Creek loop roadway at night, and we saw a couple of other snakes while biking and hiking. In all our years of camping, this is the most snakes we have ever seen at any one campground. The restrooms and shower building on the Cedar Creek loop is new. The bathrooms and showers were clean. We camped at Lake Somerville State Park - Nails Creek Unit in a...
Read moreUnbeknownst to me until arriving last week, Nails Creek and Birch Creek are basically two separate state parks on the same lake under the name Lake Somerville State Park. They are connected by the water and several trails along the western portion of the park, but I found I really preferred Nails Creek today. The weather was perfect and the wildflowers were really showing off. We saw several ant trails where they were working in a line carrying leaves and sticks and what not downhill which I thought was really cool. I also collect a lot of souvenir memorabilia which is never shown in these reviews so I included pics of...
Read moreThe nails creek unit is an outstanding place to camp. It's quite and beautiful, perfect for relaxation. I'm just sorry we only booked in for two nights. If you listen, you can hear birds, frogs and crickets without the noise of cars, mowers and aircraft. We camped in a 30-foot 5th wheel. Our site was long enough we didn't even have to unhook. The sites are affordable and have water and electricity. There's a dump station on the way out. We saw rabbits, squirrels and lots of bird life. Our Verizon phone had good reception. We plan to come back and stay longer next time. Oh, and the hosts are friendly...
