My family traveled to this location at the end of June beginning of July. Prior to writing this review, I looked at some of the other comments and would say those negative reviews are absolutely correct. We decided to try this location for a vacation due to it being within the United States and for the amazing snorkeling on the island. We settled on this hotel because it was an all inclusive, and not having to worry about anything. That being said, most of the staff absolutely views you as an inconvenience to them. Half the time they would be standing around talking to each other so I would have to insert myself into their conversation just to get some service after which they would roll their eyes and respond rudely. Multiple times I looked over at my family and made the comment that I had never been somewhere on a vacation and made to feel like I was inconveniencing them and not wanted. My whole family agreed. At one point I was sitting at the bar with my family, waiting to order and observed the two bartenders on the far side of the bar talking with some young female patrons instead of serving the rest of the bar. Multiple people were getting frustrated and made comments out loud about how terrible the service was. The hotel has one dining area for breakfast lunch and dinner which is a buffet style and about the quality you would expect for a school lunch. They do have a nicer Italian restaurant which you have to make a reservation for and is only open twice a week for dinner. We set up two reservations and the first time we went it was amazing and met my expectations of an all inclusive resort at the price point we paid. The second reservation was our last night at the hotel. My wife and I got dressed up and walked to the front doors of the restaurant and found that they were locked with a sign saying they had canceled dinner that night with no prior warnings or notifications made. We then sat at the bar by the pool and watched as multiple other couples had gotten dressed up and walked to the front door like us just to read a sign saying they had closed the restaurant turning away in disgust.
Just like stated on other reviews, they have events and crafts, but you never know if it’s actually going to happen. At one point, we waited around for 30 minutes and nobody came so we went to the front desk where they then informed us that it had been canceled. I could go on about the negative experiences to include a bartender, literally raising his voice at me when I’m trying to get his attention for a drink. The same bartender would roll their eyes whenever you ordered something they didn’t want to make and then try to convince you to get something else that was easier. Depending on the bartender you would never know what drinks you could actually order and they could make. The beach was completely covered with sea weed to the point it was almost unusable and made the whole place smell! By the end of our trip they started to remove some of it but never removed it all. It was impossible to swim.
That being said there were some great people we did meet. We were there for over a week and there are several bartenders that were truly amazing! One of them was newer and learning the ropes but did everything he could to help everybody. The cook at the grill was also incredible. He knew what he was doing and half the time we would eat lunch and dinner at the grill due to the restaurant kitchen being so bad.
Even the room service was bad. At one point we had to go to the front desk for toilet paper and towels because they never replaced them! To top it all off there was a loud group that showed up and was screaming all night and even tried to get into our room with the hotel doing nothing about it. Also there seemed to be trash everywhere! And finally, we literally had no hot water in the room for showers the entire trip!
The island itself is incredible and as you can see in pictures it’s gorgeous, but, I would stay away from this hotel unless they make some...
Read moreMy wife and I stayed 5 nights at the Divi Carina Resort. We truly enjoyed our stay and had an excellent time.
Positives: The hotel called before our trip to ask if we had any special requests such as room location, or if we needed to schedule a taxi pickup from the airport. We stayed in a beachfront double room on the first floor. The patio was peaceful, and we had a great view of the ocean and the sunrise as the beach faces the southeast. The room was clean and stocked with bottled waters. There were many options for activities to choose from. We grabbed some snorkel gear on our last day and went right in from the beach. There were many beautiful fish and a couple of big starfish, and even a large stingray crossed our path. The pool was very well maintained, cleaned every morning and kept crystal clear. Of the adult drinks that we enjoyed, almost all of them were very tasty. The only exception was a margarita that only tasted like tequila. They also do not water down their drinks at all, so you have to pace yourself. We were greeted with delicious rum punch at check-in. The wait staff and bartenders were very friendly and attentive. Thank you to Kat, Louisa, Lena, Bethany, Jordan, Khloe, Orion, and Jaleesa.
Neutrals: The food was okay to good. There was a simple menu at the grill by the pool, including sandwiches, wings, fries and salads. The main restaurant was decent buffet style food. There is also an omelet and sandwich station. The more upscale restaurant, the Tuscany, also had a short list of options that were good, but not the best. I had a lobster pasta that had a few chewy or hard pieces, like they were connective tissue. Finally, the coffee shop had a selection of sweets and a short menu of alcoholic drinks, but you could ask for a regular coffee. We aren't the biggest drinkers, so we weren't the most pleased with the lack of non-alcoholic options. We understand that the resort caters to people more interested in alcohol, but even the coffee shop had primarily alcohol and the regular coffee was weak. I'm not sure why, but I was refused a mojito at the poolside bar. The bar in the lobby was able to make one the night before, but for some reason the poolside bar does not offer them.
Negatives: There was a distinct lack of cold treats to enjoy other than alcohol. We understand that the resort caters to people who prefer an alcoholic beverage to cool off, but to have nothing was disappointing. The seaweed cleanup could significantly more efficient. It was running very early and often to try and clean the seaweed from the beach. After a while it did start to look slightly better, but there was always a good strip of seaweed. The collection bin on the seaweed rake is far too small, so that it is full before the tractor has gone ten feet. However, the tractor runs the whole length of the beach nearly every time, and it is very apparent that all of the seaweed it gathers after the first ten feet simply falls out. Modifying the rake to have a larger collector would decrease the amount of restarts. Turn back after it's full rather than running the whole length of the beach. This would save the resort money for fuel, and decrease noise, increasing customer happiness. This may be my biggest complaint. The food service at the poolside grill needs help. Most times there was only one cook trying to make orders for dozens of people, and the ticket delivery system seemed to be very haphazard. They do have a buzzer system that was only sort of used while we were there. Trying to order food or drinks from the grill on DJ night was nearly impossible. We had to shout at the bartender to place our order, and when it got done we weren't aware because it either wasn't communicated to the bartender that it was completed (see number 3) or we didn't hear the bartender over the insanely loud speakers 10 feet from the bar. We weren't given a buzzer that night, either. The room fridge emits a bright blue light, which...
Read moreThis is our 2nd trip to Divi Carina and wow what a difference a year makes. Please understand if you want to lay on the beach and just have relaxing time, this is the place for you. Where are the chips, pretzels, munchies to go with the rum punch. Why can you not put out coffee canisters/cups/lids, etc. outside by the Waves restaurant so people can come and go and not have to wait for the restaurant to open. 3.Why does this resort NOT have a small ice cream freezer underneath the balcony for the pool people, it would be a great treat on those hot sunny pool days. We were in room 252 and it was a nice room, a pedestal sink which was terrible, no floating shelves in bathroom to put any personal items, had to rely on back of toilet which isn't the most sanitary place and the outside sink for personal items. When I look at pics of the rooms, I see a wardrobe and a small bench seating, our room didn't have any of that. In our room the bathroom door was flaking pain on the inside and the outside door needed painting and the door know wasn't installed correctly, big gap in it. Saturday, 02-22-25, we were at the pool bar, and they let Madison go home at 8. The DJ quit at 10 and there was 1 bartender and 1 cook, they bombarded Mandy, and the natives were getting restless, she did a great job, and it was difficult with everyone screaming "I want a drink". They closed the pizza oven at 10 and people were irritated with that, but food did come out at a snail's pace. I just don't understand why you would have 1 bartender for a busy Saturday night. 6.The pool lounge chairs, it seemed they were scarce at times because the 1st floor residents, took the chairs to their patios, either have more chairs or have signage to NOT remove the chairs. One day during our stay, our room was never touched, not sure why. The chapping dish lids would not stay up in the Waves Restaurant and the food in those dishes was ALWAYS very cool or lukewarm, never hot. At the pool bar bees are everywhere, it was super annoying and if anyone was allergic and had no epi-pen, Divi Carina could be in HUGE trouble. While we were there 2 bartenders got stung and Scott started wearing gloves to try and protect himself. Things that didn't work: Hot tub cold, Sound system at pool bar, Fountain Coke/Diet Coke Dispenser. The website shows hammocks,
