My wife happened to discover this gem while researching the Santa Fe area and Old Route 66. The idea of an old school motor inn on Old Route 66 intrigued us. We stayed 7 nights at the Pecos Trail Inn three weeks ago and will do so again in the future.
The hosts…. Leah and Adam were absolutely gracious hosts and were welcoming and easy to talk with. From responding to requests that we might have had to recommending places and experiences that we may not have known about, they were what you’d expect from great hosts. It felt as though we had known each each other for years. It is also obvious that they are very proud of the their labor of love… and with good reason!
Staff… We made the reservations directly with the Inn and worked with Roger in making the arrangements. At check-in and during our stay, he and the rest of the front desk and housekeeping staff were welcoming, helpful, witty and certainly entertaining.
Accommodations…. Leah and Adam have renovated the Inn one room at a time. An ambitious undertaking for the couple and they have absolutely hit it out of the park, restoring this nostalgic Inn and bringing their creative and unique designs to each of the rooms. Our room was clean, spacious, comfortable and well appointed. Not to mention the comfortable bed!
Location….. with easy access to all major highways and only 5 minutes from downtown Santa Fe, it was the perfect launch point for day trips or for exploring the Santa Fe area. Our day trips included visiting Taos via the stunningly scenic “high road”, Ghost Ranch, Bandelier National Monument, Madrid (pronounced Mad-rid), Petroglyphs National Monument, Santuario de Chimayo, Valle Grande and Roswell. From Canyon Road art galleries to historic buildings and the Santa Fe Plaza, we found the town walkable and never had a problem with parking.
Restaurant…. We would be remiss if we didn’t mention the on-site restaurant Pecos Trail Cafe. Great authentic food, service and staff. From the hosts to servers to the owner, all were ready to engage in warm, welcoming conversation and provide recommendations on food or local attractions and activities.
Bottom line…. Great value, property, amenities and hosts. We look forward to returning and seeing...
Read moreI wanted to really like this property based on a recommendation from a friend. It is certainly very good value and the owner, Leah was responsive and addressed the issues, but I would have preferred they were not issues at all. The very good price the problems I encountered easier to tolerate.||I stayed in unit 131, the 2-bed casita with a bathtub. On the first night, I noticed there was strange black debris in the sheets. Upon calling the owner, she was understandable and arranged for someone to come and change the sheets the next morning since it was already nighttime when I discovered this. I was clear that I wanted the sheets on the other bed also changed since my sons as going to come stay with me the next night, however I had to repeat this to her several times as she didn’t seem to understand right away why I wanted the other bed changed also if I was not using it. However, when the housekeeper came the next day, it was evident the message had not been relayed as she did not know I also wanted the sheets in the 2nd bed changed as well. ||The housekeeper also came in and changed all the AC settings to much colder because she said she was having “hot flashes”. She did not ask me if she could change the temp and was not respectful of the fact that I was in the room.||Further, it is not possible to run a bath without the shower head also spraying water. While I appreciate that the plumbing on the property is old, I could not enjoy my bath since if I wanted to warm up the bath or refill some of the water, the shower head would spray water onto my head and I would have to stand up and manage both the shower and the lower faucet in order to run more water for the bath.||Lastly, the kitchen bowls and utensils were not clean. There was dried food and grease stains on the bowls and the utensil holder was very very dirty. Perhaps other guests did not use the kitchen, but regardless I would hope that all supplies would be spotless.||I appreciate the heart the owners are putting into the property and the very reasonable room rate, but it is disappointing that basic hygiene like clean sheets and kitchen supplies and a functioning shower/bath...
Read moreThis was our first time staying here, so we had no idea what to expect. The price was higher than what we wanted to pay, but for the price point that was available, this looked like a decent option. One major factor in our decision was they allowed our two dogs. I agree with the other reviews that the dog fee is on the excessively high side. The rooms have tile floors so cleanup is super easy for dogs. The hotel is under new ownership. They are actively working to restore and improve the property for their guests. We met one of the owners in one of the rooms being remodeled, and she was actually doing the work. Which is impressive. And she stopped to chat and was very friendly, and share what they are doing to improve the property. The rooms have a fun southwest theme. Saltillo tile, talavera tile, wood furniture, southwest art. Our room even had a live potted plant.
The location is pretty awesome. It's off the beaten path, and alone on its block. So it doesn't feel dense, congested, or crowded. It's right next to a nice small park with a fun walking path through some desert landscape. But still, It's about 10 minutes away from almost anything you're going to do. The shopping district on Cerillos is 10-ish minutes for most things. Plaza is 10 min away. The hiking trails to the northwest also about 10 minutes away. (We weren't able to hike because of the trails being closed for fire danger).
Why 4 stars instead of 5? The property is dated, and they haven't finished the upgrades yet. No pool - waiting for approval from the state after transferring the title. AC was present, but struggled to keep up with the Santa Fe heat in the late afternoon sun. But they are in the process of upgrading both the heat and AC.
I am confident that as soon as they finish their plans for the hotel, it will be 5-stars...
