Sportsman Motel Simmesport — Hotel in Simmesport

My son and I finished an unsupported cross country bike trip this summer. It took us along the southern tier of the USA and we followed a route provided by Adventure Cycling. It was a beautiful ride and a great adventure but it often took us to places with few to no lodging opportunities. When in Simmesport, La the Sportsman Motel was the only place for 50 miles in either direction. It was one of the most memorable nights of our trip. Simmesport was perhaps the poorest, shadiest (not because of the trees) and scary places we passed through on our entire 2600 mile trip. We brought mace on our trip because when biking you are frequently chased by dogs, and its helpful to have mace velcro'd to the bike just in case. When staying at the Sportsman Motel we actually slept with the mace next to our bed - unfortunately not because of the dogs but because of the people around town. The "convenience" store next door has a larger selection of (drug) smoking pipes than soda or potato chips. If you are biking across America or run out of gas in Simmesport LA, I would recommend the Sportman Motel - the only place to stay...

My overall rating of this property is 0. This being the only option in Simmesport @ $45, it was a disappointment. ||||Pros: On the ACA cycling route. Next door to a convenance store that also serves as the Hotel Office, that also served hot sandwiches, pizzas and Champs' Chicken. The food was O.K., but service slow. The family that runs this Motel is very friendly, unfortunately it does not make up for the sorry state this Motel is in. The bed was comfortable and the sheets clean. AC/Heat worked, but not makings to tell you what temperature you were setting. (hit and miss)||||Cons: (a) We asked for a non-smoking room, I don't think the Sportsman's has any such thing, ours had a dirty ashtray on the side table. (b) Live and dead wasps in the ceiling light, including larva. (c)Dead wasps in the washroom. (d) The room was dirty and the surface dusty. (e) Small thread bare towels. (f) My wife cleaned the toilet area and I cleaned the shower before use. (g)Room 114 had the slight smell of urine. (h) No Coffee in room. Came through eastbound on coast to coast bicycle ride as well.|Got me 70 miles in by 3 and wanted to press on to New Roads but didn't want to fight the DAMN headwinds any longer.|Check the room #114 first, and thought no not great, but to so many in this world, this would be a palace.
