My family is from Soldiers Grove, and we stayed at The Old Oak Inn this past weekend for a family get-together. Since we are a large gang, everyone's house was pretty full, so we decided to not stay with family this time.||||We arrived later in the evening on a Friday night and had no problem getting settled at 9pm. Carol and Holly were welcoming and friendly throughout our stay, and made us feel right at home. There was a larger party in the Acorn Lounge celebrating a wedding rehearsal, but we had a nice table in the back and were able to get a meal and some fantastic craft beer, including the Dirt Brown Ale by Driftless Brewing Company, also located in Soldiers Grove!||||Fortunately or not, we were the only guests staying that night. Because of that fact, we were invited to join them at their sister property, The Roth House, for breakfast. However, we didn't want to dress and leave the property for a meal, so Holly had coffee out for us when she left. The upside of being the only guests was that we had the restrooms (and the run of the mansion!) to ourselves, but we do feel like we missed a little of the "bed and breakfast" experience.||||Overall, I enjoyed my stay and would do it again. For those who enjoy a large Victorian home and want to escape technology and TV to enjoy a restful retreat, it was the next best thing to staying at...
Read moreI don't know where the other people ate/stayed that wrote reviews but definitely not the experience we had. We went to the Old Oak Inn for New Years Eve supper and gathering with a few relatives and it was the worst we have had in years. Not busy at all but they stuck us in their smallest room, elbow to elbow and on wobbly chairs. The food was terrible... Rib-eye steak over 50% bone, fat & gristle & no flavor. Their choice of potato & veg not ours and who eats cold mashed potatoes & asparagus? One person ordered Pork Chop and the brought him a plate with potatoes, veg on it and did not bring his Pork Chop until everyone was done with their coats on ready to leave!!! Pathetic service... had to ask for same things multiple times, they had no steak sauce at all and then asked us to cut into steaks to see which was well, med etc. Then after all that they had the gall to add 18% gratuity to each bill....
Read moreMy husband and I arrived to the Acorn Lounge at the Old Oak Inn with our two very young children on a Friday night while traveling in the area. We were exhausted and bedraggled after a long day outside in the cold, and Steph welcomed us in to an absolute haven of fun and relaxation. They took care of our family like we were their own, even taking the kids on a tour after dinner to give my husband and me a rare moment to talk in peace. The fish fry was excellent with delicious and unique sides, while still honoring the traditional menu. They were all so kind to us, distributing cookies for my birthday and engaging the kids. Their sense of historic preservation is immaculate, and the Inn space is gorgeous but not intimidating. We had to leave right after a fabulous local band started playing, and my husband and I both swore there and then that we would return for a long stay--maybe...
