The Newagen Seaside Inn is a special place that far exceeded our expectations. It's not that we had low expectations because the reviews were quite good but you can't always rely on reviews because the reviewers may have lower or different standards than you have. We also chose Newagen for its proximity to the Coastal Maine Botanical Gardens which was our primary reason for visiting Boothbay this time. Little did I know that I decide this Inn would become a destination in and of itself.||The inn is located on Southport Island on a very large and private piece of land at the end of a winding, hilly road surrounded by the ocean. We were immediately struck by how well maintained the lawn and shrubs were and by the beautiful flowers seen everywhere on the property. The receptionists at the check-in desk were very welcoming and helpful. Tip: check-in online and it's true that you'll be handed your keys as soon as you introduce yourself with no paperwork to sign or id's or credit cards to show.||We loved our room. It was attractive, very clean and the furnishings, although not distinctive, were in like new condition and good quality. There was a lot of attention to detail shown in the attractive pictures on the wall, the toiletries in the bathroom, the manner in which the towel selection was folded and arranged. The shower was very nice as well. The room we chose, the Classic King, had a king size bed, a decent sized closet loaded with wooden hangers and a good sized bureau with a mini-fridge inside containing two bottles of water. Before you check out, don't forget to take the nice canvas shopping bag gift the proprietors provide you.||As I indicated, the grounds are expansive and so well maintained which is so evident walking down to the beautiful, sparkling clean swimming pool with a covered cart full of nice beach towels. The lounge chairs at the pool and regular sitting chairs strewn about the many nicely designed decks and in the attractive gazebo overlooking the ocean are more evidence of the pride of ownership evident everywhere! Nearby is an outdoor game area and there is a very nice pickleball court we saw driving in to this mini resort. We never saw the indoor game room or took advantage of the available row boats.||The breakfast room was large and beautiful with a wall of glass on one side. The buffet breakfast was delicious with a broad selection of items to choose from. It was also well staffed with service folks quickly picking up empty plates and cleaning tables. We also had a nice dinner at the attractive Pub at the inn but that should be a separate review.||We could have spent several days here. As I said, it is a destination itself and it is very reasonably priced. Everywhere we looked, it was so obvious how well managed this place was. BTW, I am known as a very critical person who can and do find fault with nearly everything I encounter. I could find nothing to criticize at the outstanding Newagen Seaside Inn!...
Read moreMy husband and I just returned home after a 3 day stay at Newagan Resort. We were lucky to get a great price as a result of their Pay What You Can offer for Maine residents during the month of June. We stayed in the Little Inn with a large and well appointed room complete with a comfortable king bed, amazing shower, microwave, fridge, coffee maker, take away continental breakfast, and deck with super comfy cushioned chairs and amazing ocean view! We brought our own bikes to explore the island but the resort provides bikes to borrow. We loved walking the beautiful grounds and sitting in numerous areas to enjoy the oceanfront views. At cocktail time, we enjoyed sitting outside on comfy sofas sipping on drinks and enjoying a delicious appetizer. One day we had mussels which were amazing. Another day the calamari which was the best preparation we have experienced. We also loved the crab cakes. The outdoor deck also has a fire pit that others enjoyed but we loved our excellent service right on the lawns.
For dinner, we were not ready to dine inside so we ordered take out each night and found every meal amazing. The potions were large so we shared one entree each evening. We brought our own plates, wine and wine glasses so we could thoroughly enjoy the dining experience on our deck. We had the shrimp fettuccine, ravioli, and halibut and each was expertly prepared and absolutely delicious!
Many guests enjoyed the pool area but we didn’t use that area.
One day we went to the nearby Southport General Store 4 miles away and got lobster rolls then drove a half mile to Hendricks Beach. We had packed our folding chairs for this purpose and enjoyed a lunch on the beach!
Another day we had lunch at McSeagulls in Boothbay Harbor. Since the outdoor deck is open air, we felt very safe and comfortable eating there. All staff wear masks. Nd diners are expected to wear them when walking in the common area.
The Newagon staff was great and the stay felt very safe in terms of mitigation efforts for the virus. Everyone has to wear a face covering when in common indoor areas.
Highly recommend this...
Read moreHate to say it, but our stay here was not great. We stayed in the Seahorse cottage. The first thing we were greeted with when exploring our room, was the previous guest's lime stuck to the arm rest of the Adirondack chair on the deck. (right next to the rusty, rickety, wobbly patio table) Next, we started to unpack etc. and noticed that the dimmers on the lighting didn't work properly. The lights flickered the whole time they were on. The lighting in the bathroom is horrible ! I had to go back and fourth to both sinks just to shave because there is only one dim light on one side of each mirror. The light in the center of the ceiling actually took time to "warm up" to full intensity ! And it has incandescent bulbs in it. (again, dimmer malfunctioning) The light in the WC is so bright, it's like being interrogated at 3 AM. The tiles in the shower are crumbling. Then came breakfast... it's a buffet style that's about the same quality as a Red Roof Inn I stayed at in the 80's. I would expect for a stay that cost us $600 a night (after fees and taxes) that we could have actually gotten a breakfast made to order and served to us at our table ! (not luke warm scrambled eggs spooned out of a pile and under-cooked bacon with mediocre coffee) The last straw, was when we were getting ready to leave, I checked a closet that I had not opened previously, just to see if my wife had put anything in there. When I opened it, there were sprinkler pipes in there, I looked down in the bottom, only to see a rat in a trap that had obviously been dead in there for months !!! The only reason I gave this establishment 3 stars (and not one) is because the grounds were nice, the view was nice and dinner was very good. We will NOT be returning. (And please don't reply about "visa" problems and lack of help as an excuse, as we stayed at another Inn on the second leg of our trip to Maine that was half the price and served us a delicious hot breakfast that we didn't have to stand in line to retrieve and the room was clean and...
