The Stockport Mill site was established in 1842. The first mill was consumed by fire in 1849. Another mill was built that year. The second mill flourished for 54 years when it suffered another devastating fire. The present mill building was constructed in 1907. The Stockport Mill was built with hand-hewed beams and stands today much as it did in 1907.
Stockport Mill's main building stands 3 1/2 stories tall. The south side of the mill has a 2-story addition. The entire building is supported by a block foundation that is about 30' tall. The block foundation and basement is constructed in such a manner as to let the waters from the Muskingum River flow in the basement from above the dam, through the giant turbines that used to power the mill and exit on the south side of the mill into the river past the dam.
The photograph of the mill was taken in March, 1991, when the river was so high that when it flowed over the dam it created considerable white water and spray.
Landmark Company owned the mill from 1944 until 1974 when it was purchased by Jack Grove and his son Robert. The Grove's operate Stockport Mill as a feed mill. They are pursuing the idea of generating hydroelectric power in the mill, selling the electricity to an electric company, and using the funds to restore the mill.
Stockport Mill has been restored and renovated. It now has a spectacular dining room as well as hotel rooms within the mill bulding. They have also preserved much of the milling equipment. The Stockport Mill is an exciting and amazing location and one that you don't...
Read moreThis place is one of a kind. I have been coming here for the last 10 years here and there. The have unique rooms which is nice to change up and enjoy. Each room has a little balcony which overlooks the river which is a nice setting. Their food is delicious and all of the food is grown from local farmers as well as the meat. The owner of this place is an active worker and just flat out sweet as can be and very helpful. As mentioned above I have been coming here for their new years party every year for the last 10 years where they have live music, wonderful 5 course dinner as well as midnight dinner. Just to walk up a few steps and enjoy the wonderful setting before bed. Checkout is at 11 but a few later checkouts I have had myself wasn't any problem. I would recommend everyone to stay hear at least 1 time just to say you have stayed in a mill that produces it's own electricity, serves natural vegetables and home grown food all around. The cost is very reasonable, and this hotel is kid friendly as well As secluded enough for romance depending the occasion. Like the sweetheart package which has a sweet gift and Jacuzzi along with dinner, and the captain's suite which offers a full kitchen, hot tub, two rooms and sleeps 8 if I'm not mistaking. ...
Read moreWe've been there twice now, not sure if we'll go back. Both times we stayed in the captain hook suite and we really enjoyed the room and Dottie is the best. The issues we have is that both times we stayed the air conditioning was basically non existent. We even asked for assistance which they were quick to make an attempt to resolve but it just didn't matter, the air conditioner just flat out didn't work and it made our stay very uncomfortable. Also there's definitely something about the water that is an issue too, we thought the first time we stayed that maybe it was just our imagination but then the second time we stayed there it happened again. When we took showers, it was like we was left with the feeling that we couldn't get the soap off of us and it wasn't the lack of water pressure, it was like whatever was in the water is what was leaving the feeling of having soap that wouldn't come off. Overall, we really enjoyed staying here but there's too many other places to visit to keep going back to the same place that has the same issues. Not trying to be mean about it, the people are very nice, the place and rooms are very unique. I would still recommend it to others, but unfortunately...
