Camped at Bear Wallow this weekend - just across the street from Elizabeth Furnace (EF). Bear Wallow is like an "overflow" for EF when it's full - or if you want something a little more "primitive"; they call it "dispersed" camping @ Bear Wallow - no designated sites. Bear Wallow is accessible only by dirt road - SUV recommended (or park in the lot and walk ~100 yards to your site. But EF is super nice - campers at Bear Wallow pay at EF, and have access to all utilities/amenities @ EF. EF is super nice - right on Passage Creek - there is a beach area for sunning/swimming. The Volunteer Hosts @ EF, Mark and Cathy, are SUPER AWESOME - kind, friendly, knowledgeable, and helpful. They're there to serve, and otherwise don't bother you and let you enjoy the seclusion of camping; everything you want in a host. EF has super clean hot/fresh water showers, clean restrooms w/ indoor plumbing (in season), and a fresh spring water hand pump. Lots of kids and families running around and having fun and enjoying nature. It was crowded (Labor Day Weekend) - and noisy from people having fun. Some minor road noise too from Fort Valley Road. 100% will be back there. If you're looking for quiet and seclusion, go elsewhere - or maybe try Bear Wallow. If you're looking for a amenity-filled, easy, family-friendly place to camp, EF is probably your best bet ever on the face of the earth under the sun of all time. Can't speak highly enough of it. Also, there's a nice Walmart, Target, Lowes, etc right off I-66 in Riverton - with tons of Camping and Outdoors gear (speaking of Walmart) - and not too crowded on a Saturday afternoon - great place to stock up on your way into the backcountry. EF campground is well marked and easy to find from Ft Valley Rd. Pay your daily $16 fee at the pay station right at EF Kiosk when you first pull in - can't miss it. The GW/Jefferson NF website is NOT clear on how to obtain a pass/permit/pay fees. Disregard all their website content on Permits and Passes if you're just trying to camp the night and don't have any park passes. This was super confusing. You pay to camp at the site at the nightly rate (cash/checks accepted ONLY), and this rate has nothing to do with their Passes/Permitting process outlined on...
Read moreSuper rude hosts. Overpriced basic spots. Made a mistake and went down one of the camp roads the wrong way and someone was shouting WRONG WAY at me, as if that’s less disruptive at 10:30 pm than me just quietly correcting my mistake . Top it off with a host intersecting me to lecture me about going the wrong way. I literally drove the equivalent of one city block in a half empty campground in the middle of the night the wrong way, APOLOGIZED for it, mentioned some of the direction arrows are dim in the dark, and was condescendingly corrected that they are all bright and told “we have rules here “. I wouldn’t advise staying here unless you never make mistakes and have a high tolerance for...
Read moreThis is the most suitable campsite in the Greater Washington area. The staff are particularly nice and the lovely volunteers are divided into two special camping areas. One is a decorated standard venue and the other is a venue that basically retains the original style. The fire is piled up with a piece of stone and it is very wild! Of course, you can also make a lot of friends to drink and drink in this place. There are also many small animals to accompany you to watch the...
