Due to my medical issues; I was excited to have an accessible two-bedroom accommodation for our family Fourth of July vacation, with Suffolk being close to the tidewater/hampton roads attractions. We spent the 4th at the beach, and brought back a lot of sand - thus, we took the sheets off the bed the next morning to have them replaced. We spent that morning at the pool, then went to Waterside in Norfolk. Prior to leaving for Norfolk, we stopped at the desk requesting that our bed linens be replaced, again due to the sand. Sadly, we found that our room was not attended to at all on the 5th - the housekeeper stated that we requested service too late in the day (@2 pm) and she was already done with that floor. Larry, the engineer on duty that night; graciously not only brought up linens for both beds but assisted us with making the beds - which for me would have been impossible. What was also impossible was cleaning all of the dirty dishes that were found in the cabinets - pots, pans, mugs, plates, etc; by hand due to dirty dishes sitting in the dishwasher and no liquid dish detergent. Please have maintenance address the dishwasher's attachment to the countertop (lack of it) and the door handle. Melissa, was helpful with additional bath linens as well. We pulled our own trash and refreshed the toilet paper too!
I have Lupus and Fibromyalgia, which has decreased my mobility tremendously; however in my prime, I worked for EcoSure and completed inspections in the hospitality industry; our room was filthy! Period. If I did not have family with me to help, I would have had a Fourth of July vacation in horrible living conditions, that I paid to stay in. This is not acceptable, for anyone. My daughter stayed in a room directly across the hall from me, and her room was very nice, she even had liquid dish detergent!I don't know what happened to 314; however, I was pleased to see that the Suffolk Towneplace can provide a Marriott level of accommodations. It is not acceptable however, to not have that same attention to details for a handicap accessible room, that was indeed not...
Read moreCheck out took 30 minutes. The lady charged my card 4 times. I have 4x the amount of The stay held on my credit card. Not at all convenient when still traveling. Finally got up to the room and it smelled so horrible upon entry. I had the maintenance man with me and asked if he also smelled that. He responded "a little bit" and offered to grab some febreze. At this point I had already waited over an additional 30 minutes for him to arrive to do the walk thru for pets and was checking in after midnight so just figured febreze was better than nothing. I was tired so not in the mood to deal with more delays at the front desk. Walk thru went fine. Never stayed at a pet hotel where this was necessary. Very weird and uncomfortable. Had to point out issues to the guy as the walk thru automatically put me on the defensive that I was going to be charged upon checkout for damage my dogs did not create. Once complete, Beds were comfortable. Slept fine. Probably because I was tired from driving all day. Woke up for breakfast. Options were comical. Worst layout ever. Only 1 other guest eating and they looked at the food selections the same as I did. With disgust. I finally chose a yogurt and banana as nothing prepared looked edible. Very disappointing. When ready to leave again I had to wait 30+ minutes for maintenance to arrive to do the walk thru. Not a surprise but my dogs did no damage and the walk thru had been a waste of time. Worst stay ever with the Marriott hotel group. Will NEVER stay here again. Worst part was I only had dogs with me due to evacuating florida. All other hotels we had stayed at along our journey had not charged any fees for the dogs due to the hurricane circumstances. This hotel charged a non refundable $100. Bad business practice to be so stringent in others desperate time of need. We could have saved that $100 for the next hotel on the way home or to pay for damage to our home or replacing all the spoiled food in our fridge from no...
Read moreTLDR-Super nice staff, clean, great location, badly in need of a remodel, lots of car and truck noises, thin walls
I stayed at this hotel twice several years apart, both stays were several days long. We stayed in the two room suite each time. Both visits were different rooms so I feel this is a pretty comprehensive review. The hotel is very near family for us so despite its flaws we stayed their twice. I just realized as I started to post this, we took no photos. This is unusual for us but I blame the fact we had a really long two day drive. I wish I had photos to offer because then you can see what I am saying about needing a remodel.
Plusses Rooms are very large Staff is very friendly and helpful Facility is clean Location is great for shopping, restaurants and interstate access Great water pressure--because the hotel is old it does not have the trickle style shower heads like most modern hotels
Minuses You can hear the road noise from all the cars and trucks that use College Drive The walls are thin, we could hear our neighbor snoring through the wall The furniture is old and scratched The carpet in our room was torn The paint is stained from years of hands touching doors The side door is exit only because the lock is broken The door key readers worked about 50% of the time. We had three keys and on one night, none of the three worked necessitating a trip to the front desk. The lady was very kind and fixed it quickly issuing us all new keys but it is just an aggravation I did not need. I attribute this to the need for remodel. The hotel does not have proximity readers it has the old style magnetic keys you stick in a slot. Aside from this hotel, I do not recall the last time I saw those.
If they remodeled I would absolutely stay there again. In its present state, probably not. I will say their price is in line with their dated facilities so if value is a priority this hotel may still...
