We love Chenango Valley State Park! We visit a different state park each year on the 4th of July week, and this year was our second year at CVSP. We rented a few cabins and I feel like many people have no idea on what a great deal the cabins are! Less than $500 for a week during peak season for a cabin that easily sleeps 6!
We rented cabins 18 and 19, and I will say that 19 was MUCH nicer and recently renovated, while 18 was the older style and not near as pretty. 19 had all new t&g pine inside and everything redone. Plus 19 is a fun cabin to have if you like to socialize with people as they go by, as all the other cabin occupants have to go by that cabin on the way to theirs. And we're a pretty friendly group lol!
The beach is definitely different than you'd expect if you've never been here before, with no sand at the edge and just grass and concrete, but it IS a nice swimming area with a few diving boards and several different depth swimming areas.
We like to Geocache and there are quite a few in the park, too. The staff were all friendly and easy-going relative to our experience in other state parks. The trails are nice, but NOT very well marked at all, in real life or on the maps they provide! We ended up on our way out of the park on the Sylvan Trail (insert ominous music here) when we THOUGHT we were just jumping on the cabin trail for a mile or so. Five miles later, one of us got good enough signal on their phones to see that our little dot on the map was almost up and out of the park lol. So maybe consider starting fresh with your trail maps as the current ones we saw were photocopies of photocopies of photocopies, and not faring too well or easily deciphered!
The lakes are also great for kayaking and no fees or restrictions to bringing in your own kayaks.
The snackbar at the swimming area was also nice and a few days we were there, there were nature touch & feel exhibits in one of the buildings there - WITH free popcorn! lol
We were slightly disappointed that there isn't any kind of gift shop, though. Almost all of the parks either sell t-shirts, etc in their office (theirs is pretty darn small, so no room I guess) or have a gift shop to sell those kind of momentos, but neither in this case. I know I'll almost always buy a commemorative t-shirt if it's available, so I wish they did sell those.
Overall, we love this park and I'm sure we'll be back in a few...
Read moreThis place is cool. It could have been an easy 5. I stayed in sunrise and the sites are sort of close but not on top of each other, reasonably spaced. Water and bathroom are nearby no matter which site you choose. The entire park is very pleasant, swimming area was cool. I liked everything about this place except for a group of people 4 sites away who were blasting music all day. I chose this loop because I hoped without the hookups and looking a little more spaced out that it would be tent campers and not party central. Mostly that was the case but this one group with two trucks, 3 tents, 2 canopies, and clearly more than 6 (max occupancy) people were playing music so loud you could hear it clearly throughout the entire loop. The playground, my site, bathrooms, it was everywhere and crystal clear. This wasn't during quiet hours but still it is so inconsiderate. They started at 10am and went all day. It paused for half an hour around 6pm and it was soooo relieving. You could hear the wind through the trees, birds, etc. It was like everyone and everything else finally came alive for a short period of time. I don't know why they don't designate an area to disallow any and all speakers. I don't want to hear a boombox or car stereo when I'm trying to relax in nature. Force them to rent a pavilion or at least corral them into a party area and make a strict no party area. I don't mind voices, kids, people banging around, even musicians doing acoustic stuff - normal life sounds. I hate the constant recorded music that drowns everything else out and is so stifling. The campground was nearly full and no one else was playing anything. Additionally they left trash like bunch of balloons and ramen cups strewn about near the bathroom. Their site and the surrounding area was trashed when they finally left. It sucks that one group can ruin it for everyone else. I'll only take off one star because it is a nice campground and I'd love to come back. I just hope they can stamp out inconsiderate behavior like that. The rangers do patrol often and they're very friendly but that group would sneakily lower it when they saw cars and I imagine the rangers don't want to be too strict at first. They eventually got caught but I think having a ban on speakers would help stop it sooner and not be a significant detriment to...
Read moreMay 2021 Stay at Cabin 7 in Chenango Valley State Park. It's a bit hard to find information about the cabins for rent within the park so I'm writing this review to help. My best advice is to call the office directly before reserving a cabin (or campsite) to get more detailed information before you click 'reserve'. I did not.
While most of the cabin sites in Cabin Colony 1-19 look terrific, Cabin 7 was a bit of a disappointment just because of it's close proximity to Cabin 6. These would be JUST GREAT rented together for 2 families/parties that want to share a site...not so good for those wanting any privacy. This wasn't apparent to me when I reserved on line and we had a large and noisy 'guy' party next to us for 2 days. UGH!
Also, the office is aware that the heater in that cabin doesn't work so we needed to ask for a space heater- even though we expected and paid for a heated cabin. There were no curtains over the sink (maybe for some good reason) but we were exposed to the 'party people' without them. I sacrificed a blanket to make shift a curtain. I'm including some photos to give you an idea of what it looks like, although they can't show the rocky and hilly site for Cabin 7 nor it's close proximity to next door Cabin 6. My visiting friend with mobility issues wasn't comfortable coming onto the site or inside the cabin. Too bad.
As I said before, all the others looked much more private and some had level sites with minimal steps to enter, esp. the 3 ADA cabins.
And do go visit the American Grill- great people, good drinks and food and and terrific view of the the lovely golf course there. AAA+ It's new this year and we hope they succeed. Had some good priced offers for picnics delivered to campsites- take advantage of...
