You don't just visit Overlook, at least we didn't. You settle into the casual elegance and comfort of a family home in which a real family is present. Roxanne, Jim, and their daughter Kim have had this lovely, low key place for 40 years. It is not just a place to stay: it is a living, breathing home. Comfy chairs sit in a room with family heirlooms and photos. Two terraces over ever changing views of the Hudson: slow barges chugging downriver; long train whistles echoing across the water as the Hudson Line travels north or south. Breakfasts were delicious and always had a special treat -- muffins, or little cakes - that made them special. Our room, and the others we saw, were comfy and cosy. We played chess on a lazy Susan table and we played hide and seek with the gorgeous Bengal cat that occasionally interrupted his hunting trips to stop by and check us out. Our hosts attended to us with grace and charm, and I missed them the minute we left. Overlook on the Hudson will always hold a special place in my heart, as will the family that makes it so. ( I can't upload photos for technical challenges, but trust me: it's gorgeous. Warmest regards to the host family for a wonderful...

Read moreMy wife and I were recovering from some surgeries and just wanted to do somewhere to enjoy life. This was perfect. Jim, Roxanne and their daughter Kim were perfect hosts and were so accommodating. We spent most of the day enjoying the incredible view of the Hudson and local wildlife. Breakfast is serves outside (weather permitting). They had private tables but they were close enough to chat with the other guests if you wanted. The pool, lounges, padded chairs and umbrellas gave us a lot of reasons not to go anywhere. We actually preferred to bring dinner in and enjoy the evening view and the wood fired chimenea. But there is plenty of hiking, biking, kayaking and Bear Mountain close by. You could almost walk to West Point. We had the smaller Emily room but it was quite comfortable. Their common rooms are spacious and set up for hanging out in inclement or cold weather. Big screen TV, big couches, games and a fireplace are all for guests. There is a lot of history in the house and it was fun chatting with the owners to learn about it. We are definitely coming back...
