Where to begin?!!! We stayed at Daybreak & it seemed at times that we had the building to ourselves even if it wasn’t so - it was truly peaceful... From contact free checking in after a long drive (gift bags were left on a ledge in front of the service window at the main office with our name/room on the front & directions on how to reach it, plus a sweet treat : )). We found our room quiet, cozy, comfortable and beautifully decorated. There was truly everything we could need (a good sized mini fridge, coffee maker, coffee cups, wine glasses/bottle opener , small writing or dining table, lamps and chairs). Because of covid, many places can’t offer a buffet breakfast anymore, but Wayne and Amy have a pre made version (I would call it a perfectly thoughtful hikers breakfast : ) and good strong coffee available with all the fixings necessary starting self serve at 6am in the main office. You also have the option to grab your breakfast the night before from the fridge which is great if you are heading out for a crack of dawn hike! The proximity to so many peaks I.e. Mount Marcy, Cascade, etc. is only about a 20 minute drive away. John Brown’s farm (a must visit site) is just a few minutes down the road past Mount Marcy’s parking area (Adirondack Loj). Lake Placid is also about the same distance & in same vicinity. There were quite a few places to eat only 5-10 minutes from the ADK trail Inn as well (one of my favorites was Baxter Mountain Tavern - great food!). Keene Valley is 10 minutes down the road (you’ll most likely pass through on your way in) with a grocery, coffee house, gas station, etc. Honestly it’s such a great spot to launch from and I truly can’t wait to come back - if you are looking for high end lodging then please head to someplace in Lake Placid. But if you are looking for a cozy, rustic, lovingly thought out arrangement with reasonable prices the ADK Trail Inn is for you : ). P. S. Although I had the pleasure of meeting Wayne briefly and didn’t have the chance to meet Amy, I found a copy of her book in our room that I purchased. From the moment I opened it and started reading, I just knew it was no coincidence that I had found...
Read moreADK Trail Inn nails it for exactly the kind of place you want to stay in when visiting the Adirondacks, and I say this as a long-time visitor to the area and 46er. This was my first time staying at this inn.
You can't beat the location - close enough to the heart of the high peaks to be a great basecamp for hiking (we hiked the lower great range from St Hubert's this trip). Also close enough to Wilmington to get a great meal at Hungry Trout.
The grounds, while on a(n undeniably convenient) busy, main road, are beautiful with lovingly tended gardens and a scenic, peaceful river to the rear. The nightly campfire is a nice bonus.
I shared a dog-friendly room with my very large dog, while my 2 friends shared a different room. The rooms are humble but functional. Any hiker will appreciate the excellent water pressure in the shower (a rare treat in the adks)! No tub, no problem. Soap, shampoo, and conditioner are provided if you don't bring your own. Even though the weather was hot & humid, the a/c kept the room comfortable. The mini-fridge/freezer was more than adequate for my needs, and the microwave worked well. The mattress might be a bit soft for the fussy (yeah, I read other reviews here), but after a real hike, any mattress is a friend! The room was bright and clean and outfitted appropriately, without a lot of stuff i don't need nor want (like a tv). Wifi and Verizon cell service worked flawlessly.
The office was a central hub for check in (key & cookie waiting for you), as well as a supply spot if you needed extra towels or whatnot. An appropriate brown-bag breakfast (hard boiled egg, granola bar, fruit, yogurt, juice) was available daily in the fridge there. My friends availed themselves of the coffee.
I had a long conversation with Elizabeth (& Ned), who we encountered outside. They couldn't have been nicer.
I can't imagine anyone NOT being happy staying here. This is the kind of family-run, small town lodging that reflects the personal touch, care, and thoughtful approach of the owners. They get the Adirondacks. They get hikers. I hope to...
Read moreMy husband and I stay at the ADK Trail Inn every time we visit the Adirondacks for a hiking trip! We have stayed there 4 times in the past year (with a 5th weekend already scheduled), and our experience there is excellent every time. First, the location of the ADK Trail Inn is perfect for hikers. It's within 20 minutes of most of the High Peak trailheads. There are a good selection of restaurants under a 5 minute drive, or it's close enough to enjoy all that Lake Placid and Saranac Lake have to offer. The ADK Trail Inn also sits quietly on the bank of the Ausable River, complete with a hammock, fire pit and grill. There is also a separate game room for guests. Breakfast is included! For hikers who wish to get an early start, the innkeepers will graciously pack you a breakfast the night before to take on the go! Otherwise, a full breakfast is served starting at 7am. It typically includes a hot entree, steel cut oatmeal or breakfast burritos, toast, english muffins, yogurt, hard boiled eggs, cereal, juices, coffee/tea, etc. The rooms are exactly what you would expect for an Inn tucked into the Adirondack mountains. The decor is mountain appropriate and the rooms themselves are comfortable. Each room is unique, some more updated than others (the "vintage" rooms have not yet been upgraded, but still very clean and comfortable!), and all rooms are a good size. They are also each equipped with mini fridges, microwaves and wi-fi. You will not find a TV in each room, but there is a very large TV for use off the breakfast dining area. Lastly, the innkeepers, Wayne and Amy, are very friendly and accommodating. We have never received anything but the best...
