Bottom line: We had a very nice and comfortable 2 days. The add-on art and sculpture class is well worth doing. The room matches 3 to 4 star hotels and we were well served.. We will stay again.
The Spiral Stair Inn is an 1820 house rescued from demolition in 2004 and being refurbished by owner Casey ever since. We were the only guests in October 2020.
The house has high ceilings, interesting woodwork, and a front stair with a 180 curved turn partway up. Folks with balance or mobility issues could have trouble.
The guest room at the top of the stairs includes a king bed, windows that open, several chairs, TV and internet. Heat comes from an electric fire and the very comfortable bed includes an electric blanket. Both it and the attached bath are comfortable and spacious.
The attached bath runs the full width of the bedroom so it's roughly 7 or 8 feet by 15 or 20. There is an old fashioned looking but totally modern claw foot tub. Epsom salts are provided to encourage a soak. There is also a sauna, rocking chair, gas space heater, and elegant round glass sink. Casey goes out of his way to provide unexpected amenities and creature comforts.
We enjoyed two breakfasts. Since we are gluten free Casey served an omelet with scallops and cheese one day and gluten free pancakes with stewed apples the next. Both were cooked to order and served with a side of conversation.
Casey also owns the Hot Art Studio. A number of his works are on the Inn grounds and he offers a combined pottery and metal sculpture class. My wife was much more successful at pottery, producing 7 attractive bowls. I produced 6 with features like collapsed rims, twisted middles, and asymmetrical profiles. Ah well.
My wife gardens and I both motorcycle. Our sculpture is a motorcycle to grace the garden. See the review for Hot Art for details.
We didn't actually use the outside hot tub because it rained both evenings. Casey did show us the tub and went over operation. The unit was clean and hot (104) unlike many that are really tepid tubs.
There are only two issues we had. The bathtub plumbing is old so the tub fills slowly. Pick up your beverage of choice, sit in the bathroom rocker and sip while the tub fills. The other is the bathroom gas space heater. It is the unvented type so some smells and combustion products are vented into the room. It didn't bother my wife but it gave me a headache. The heater was the reason for 4 not 5 stars. Turned it off for the duration of our stay and the rooms were very comfortable with outside temps of 40 to 50 and rain.
We had a good time. See my review for Hot Art for more information on the...
Read moreIf you are ever lucky enough to spend a night or two at the Spiral Stair Inn, then you are in for a relaxing break from the routine of life, an exquisite breakfast, and the pleasure of spending time with the warm and hilarious McDonalds.
My husband and I had a wedding at a vineyard close to Romulus and were directed to The Spiral Inn through the wedding website. Lucky us! We paid a very low rate for an amazing room. The bedroom itself was huge and it had a master bathroom twice the size of our apartment in Hell's Kitchen. The Bathroom came with a claw-foot tub and a beautiful sauna. The bedroom has a luxurious kings size sleigh bed and a fridge to keep snacks and beverages. Here is the best part: there is a hot tub! The hot tub is located in the back of the house and is available for use all hours. We sat and looked at the stars at around 1am and it was perfect.
Breakfast is beyond yummy. We ate fresh local candied fruit in delicious crepes and thick (local!) bacon. Honestly I'm still dreaming of that bacon. The meal was paired with a strong cup of coffee topped with fresh whipped cream.
We were just looking for a bed to sleep in and ended up having a memorable experience and we can't wait for our next visit to the Spiral...
