I have been camping here since 2022 and never had a problem before but I'm afraid that the site has gone downhill considerably. I was robbed twice while staying here last week. They stole my camp stove, lantern, and battery charger the first time. I changed sites, moving from site 2 to site 8, closer to the bathrooms and other campers in the area that evening but I was robbed again the following afternoon of a flashlight. The thieves seemed to be looking for electronics, money or anything they can sell. They ransacked my tent very methodically both times, looking through everything in the tent and leaving all the pillows arranged in a row across my bed. Little to no police presence in the area and a complete lack of anyone watching the actual campsite during the day meant that I had no one to report the theft to unless I went driving around Ulster County looking for a random cop because I certainly wasn't sticking around in the middle of nowhere after that happened to me and waiting for the police just to file a report. When I realized that I was being targeted regardless of the site I was staying at I packed up all my stuff and got out of there immediately. Other issues I faced during the week at the site prior to getting robbed included discovering people sitting in their car in my only parking spot late at night, the sound of random gunfire maybe a quarter mile from where I was camping at 3 in the morning, as well as bags of garbage thrown into the woods (keep in mind that this is BEAR country barrels of nuclear waste would be less dangerous) and broken camping equipment left lying on the side of the road....Also expect to clean up a lot of broken glass at your site. The caretakers seem to be more interested in adding new editions to their vacation house located on the same property than maintaining the campgrounds there. The woods surrounding the site look like there are a lot of old trails running through them. I suspect the locals go in there to mess with people from the city and swipe their stuff. But who knows? I suppose it was just as likely that I was robbed by someone who drove in. If you camp here take everything even remotely valuable with you when you leave during the day. If the DEC took care of this place and park rangers actually bothered to show up (pretty sure there's like 1 in the entire county) it would be...
Read moreGreat free campground! Only one site suitable for a car to pull in (site #4 - first one on the right when you reach the signs) the others are too tight and walking in with a tent would be easier. Pretty little pond, campfire ring, picnic table and ample space. Not busy when we visited on 6/3/24. Decent amount of bugs in the evening...
Read moreThis was a great roadside camp with a decent amount of spots. Some of them are even large enough to share if the original camper is okay with that. It was convenient to camp for a night before waking up early to hike up Hunter Mountain. I will use it again in the future if I need to arrive late before a...
