This is the second October that we visited Cooperstown and stayed in this motel because it is, in general, an adequately good place to explore the area at an affordable price: basic but with a lovely view of the lake. However, this year we were very disappointed at the conduct of the staff. There was a power outage in the area, which also affected water provision in the motel. As a result, there was no way of flushing the toilet in a room of four with two children, one of whom was not feeling very well. This happened on a Sunday morning and we were due to check out the next day (Monday). Although the receptionist said that the power would likely be restored in 3-4 hours, my family and I were not sure about this prediction, and asked if it were possible for us to depart a day earlier and receive the refund for the last day. The receptionist explained that she is a "weekend employee" and she does not have the authority to make this decision, while also refusing to give us the contact details of the management, who apparently relinquish their supervisory responsibility over the weekend. The receptionist proceeded to state that the property "is in the country" and things like this can happen pretty often--meaning, water and electricity outages can happen and you, unlucky customer, better deal with it but also pay in full. We do not expect a boutique experience from a random motel; but we do expect the minimum courtesy of understanding that a hotel cannot impose the technicality of its no-refund policy when it is unable to provide its terms of service (here: basic amenities) regardless of the reason behind this inability. The hotel should either allow people to leave with a refund for the remaining day(s), or at the very least make a gesture of reducing the price for a day, offer vouchers, etc. Their solution was to give us water from the rather murky pool to use in the bathroom, which we did not need because at that moment, thankfully, the electricity was restored. About an hour afterward, the owner (?) knocked at the door to see if we are well or need anything. Kind of her to stop by, but totally unnecessary and decorative at that point. Presenting the outage as "something beyond our control" for which "you have to pay nonetheless" is the attitude of grifters, not of serious business people with a sense of honor and customer service. We are not...
Read moreWe rented the Modern White Cottage #134 while in town visiting family. We were looking for a house-type experience that would allow us to bring three different family groups together for the weekend activities. The cottage accomplished this goal and we found the facilities to be clean and it served our primary purpose.
The cottage contained 2 rooms with queen beds and one room with two double beds. There were 1 1/2 baths and a small kitchen and dining room area. The motel and cottage are located on the shores of Lake Otsego and we did have a decent view of the lake and the changing foliage across the water. The deck on the outside of the cottage provided us with a few chairs, a table and a propane grill that we used to cook on one night. All of these things were great.
However, some parts of our stay could have been better. The beds and pillows were terribly uncomfortable. I may as well have been sleeping on plywood. In fact, I did sleep on the floor for one night and think I slept better there than in the bed. The pillows were just as hard as the bed and left me with terrible neck stiffness. The stairs leading up to the entrance of the cottage had a slight lean to them and while they were solid, it looked slightly unnerving. The advertised free continental breakfast was probably the most basic breakfast I've ever had at a hotel/motel. There was a very limited selection of food and we ended up going out for breakfast on the second day of our stay.
The facility looked good and the location was nice and rather quaint but there were just a few things that made the stay uncomfortable for us. Overall, it wasn't bad and it wasn't great. Just an average overall experience. A few comfort improvements would go a long way to making this a better experience and a place we would consider visiting regularly every year as we make this an annual...
Read moreWe booked a three night stay here to use as a home base for some activities we had planned. The hotels in Cooperstown were mostly booked, or very expensive and this was a reasonable alternative even though we knew we’d have to drive 10 minutes into town. The first day we were there was fine. The parking was good and the room was very clean. Little did we know some of that would change.
If you aren’t familiar with Cooperstown Dreams Park, be sure to check the schedule before planning a trip to Cooperstown, unless you’re there for a baseball tournament (which apparently our entire motel was). It will make your time there very difficult. All the shops will be clogged, and the Hall of Fame will be mobbed.
Our motel was basically empty all day and you could come or go as you please. But at around 9:00pm it would get completely full with cars parked everywhere, even in places there weren’t any spots. There would be car doors slamming, kids screaming and playing, and adults drinking and talking until well after 11:00pm. This happened every night. It was extremely annoying, especially when you’re woken up from a sound sleep.
So if you want to pay a bunch of money to sleep on a crappy mattress and be woken up by pretentious baseball families every night. I highly recommend staying here! Also, it was just far enough outside of Cooperstown to be annoying whenever you wanted a bite to eat or a warm breakfast. It was a one and...
