When I booked our trip at the Seaside Cottages on Mount Desert Island, I was a little hesitant because there were so few (recent) reviews. However, we really wanted to get to Acadia and were on a strict family budget, so we reserved Aldernest (lower level) for a week in August. So glad we did!||||1) We were able to enjoy a peaceful location on MDI within a short drive to the best of Acadia, but without the traffic and crowds. We much preferred the Southwest and Northeast Harbors (and all they had to offer) over Bar Harbor. ||2) Our hosts, Kathy and Jay Shields, were so nice and accommodating - very responsive to emails and phone calls and happy to give recommendations. (We aren't the "touristy" type and I so appreciated the recommendations for more local choices.)||3) Aldernest may not have a direct view of the water, but I appreciated the fact that it was only moments away via a walking path (easy to take a cup of coffee or glass of wine) and that it was the appropriate level of flat, pebbly Maine beach along with reasonable cliffs for my 11 and 12 year old to climb without giving me a heart attack. My two kids LOVED IT! ||4) Aldernest Den is perfect for a family of four. We used every inch of the space, but did not need one inch more. We ate one meal out a day, but cooked the other two in the equipped kitchen and really enjoyed that (not to mention the money savings!). Kathy had recommended we buy food in Ellsworth, which we did, and when we needed more, we shopped at the IGA on 102.||5) Even though Aldernest Den is the lower level of a two story home, we did not feel at all confined or disrupted by our upper level neighbors. In fact, after meeting them the first day, we never saw them again.||6) Aldernest has an awesome open piece of property for playing catch/frisbee or just running around. Unfortunately, the mosquitoes were so bad when we were there (bug spray helped), that we chose to stay inside if we weren't down by the water where they weren't as bad.||7) Lucky #7 - Aldernest Den is only $900 for seven nights in comparison to the expense of most other island accommodations.||||Note - we are quite happy with "simple" - we don't require frills, high end furnishings/details, or state of the art to enjoy family . Aldernest Den is no-frills, just simplistically perfect for a week's getaway for a family on a budget. We would definitely come back and reserve...
Read moreOur 3rd trip to Maine 2nd trip to this area and this cottage. This is truly the best spot. 30 min to the best of Acadia, hidden gems, Bar Harbor, great food, dessert. Theres so much right here you could stay in southwest harbor and never get bored. At this cottage I spend most of my morning sipping coffee, taking in the view, soaking up the smell of the ocean, and searching for seaglass. I cant imagine being anywhere else. The kitchen is fully equipped. Views of the ocean from the living area, kitchen and main bedroom.||Seawall, Bass Harbor Lighthouse, Wonderland, Seal Cove. Not to mention the beauties in Acadia such as thunder hole, sand beach, otter cliff, ocean path, bee hive hike, Cadillac mountain, hunters beach and little hunters beach, carriage road, eagle lake. So many more to mention. Theres kayaking, bike rentals, hiking of any adventure you choose. I only visit in October for my anniversary and the weather is perfect for light long sleeve in the day. In the evening I add a scarf light sweater cardigan or coat and knitted hat depending on the wind. Later evening or visits to Cadillac mountain definitely get a little more bundled up. ||Kathy and Jay are great. Very friendly and helpful. You dont know they are there unless you need them. I was hesitant on giving a review because this place is so great I dont to ever miss out. But the truth is if you dont experience the magic and beauty of being here you are...
