I have been staying at the Grand Aleutian Hotel since June 27th 2025 and it is now jul 18th. I am here for work and I finally received my plane ticket home for July 27th so I have a 30 ish day opinion as to why I give this place a 1 star review. To be honest I am quite irritated and trying to calm myself before writing this review but unfortunately time won't help my opinion. Going on 3 days straight of terrible sleep. If you are thinking of staying here I hope my shared experience will help you in your decision. I will start with the fact that I am working a night shift 1800 to 0600 / 6 p.m to 6 a.m. and 7 days a week. I know that it can't be helped and is what it is but I think it needs to be pointed out that the walls are very thin and you can hear absolutely everything. Including the guy two doors down grunting when he sits on the toilet. I usually have the TV going to drown out some of the noises but half the time the TV doesn't work. The major problem is the doors! You have to close the doors slowly so that they won't slam shut which absolutely nobody does not even house keeping. So while trying to sleep during the day when every single door that opens slams shut it quite literally shakes the entire hallway and it happens over and over and over again 🙄. Do to being on the evening shift i have to schedule a time to get my room serviced. I get to the hotel after work around 6:30 a.m sometimes closer to 7 and it takes a minute to wind down and get to sleep around 8:30 after getting my boots off and showered. I then have to wake up in the middle of my sleep to get my room serviced. Try to let it go a few days and keep the do not disturb sign on the door handle otherwise you will get a knock on the door close to 10a.m. sometimes you will get the unfortunate wake up even with the sign on the door if the constant slamming doors don't wake you first. I'd say this place is a 12 hr stay at best during normal hours. Now do to the nature of my job i have to stay in hotels frequently and even the less desirable places offer complimentary Wi-Fi. You would think at the nightly cost of a room here that Wi-Fi would be included. It sure would help to just play a movie on my damn phone when the TV decides to stop working to drown out some of the noises. I think i might bunch up a hoodie tonight for a pillow instead of using the provided bricks. On a positive note the front desk personel is friendly and a pleasure to deal with. The offered laundry service is great. From what I heard the seafood buffet is great aswell unfortunately not happening on my schedule. I have attached a picture of the single most useful investment this place can make. I hope this either helps the establishment make a few changes or for visiting guests to know what to expect or hopefully you reading this has a better experience than I have. Lacking sleep so please forgive my irritability and...
Read moreMost places in Alaska, just be thankful for what is available. In all fairness, there is lot to be thankful and good to be said for the only game in town.||||Service. Front desk, wait staff, Ice Cream shop, housekeeping were all friendly and helpful. The room took a little longer to be ready but this may be the standard here. ||||Lobby. It is 'grand' though a bit dated. Plenty of sitting and large enough for an event receiving area. The lobby led to the main restaurant and to a sit down ice cream/snack/deli shop.||||Location. It is on the main road. It is probably a good 20 minute walk from the airport. Maybe a 30 minute walk from the cruise terminal. A cruise ship pulled in and the road was filled with pax/tourist snapping pics of pristine Dutch Harbor. Across the street from the hotel is the Norwegian Rat Saloon which surprisingly had families with kids as customers. 5 minute was a Safeway. Across the street also was the Alaskan Ship Supply which is the biggest store on island. It carried a variety of merchandise from grocery items to furniture, appliances and outdoor gear.||||Room. I was fortunate to get a two queen room with large windows that opened up to a patio area overlooking a picturesque bay. The room was large probably meant for a family as it had 2 vanity sinks one inside the bedroom and one inside the bathroom. A comfortable chair and and an ottoman had a great window view I mentioned earlier. There was a flat screen TV that I never used and a small fridge.||||Amenities. Bath soap and shampoo were dispenser type which eliminated small plastic bottles. No bar soap nor lotion. There was in infusion water dispenser at the lobby.||||Facilities. I was only there for 2 nights but did get to dine at the main restaurant. Service was great and the food was good and unexpectedly reasonably priced for Alaska. I missed the famed seafood buffet on Sundays and Friday night. I also had ice cream at deli/snack shop. The counter lady was super customer friendly. She had me sampled a few flavors prior to indulging. There was a conference facility on the 2nd floor. Parking was free and self park. I did not see any valet service.||||WIFI. None provided by the hotel. A third party ISP was provided by the front desk as public service as the hotel was not associated with this internet company. The ISP rates were expensive but handy as it covered most visited area on island like the airport, pier/harbor, the main drag and the town across the bridge.||||For such an isolated corner of the earth, the Grand Aleutian is sufficient and at least the rate I got was reasonably priced. Will gladly return...
Read moreThe room was straight out of 60's motel decor, with a few more modern amenities. That's ok. It was just a nice place to be, after a couple weeks at sea on a project.||||Something I will remember always: I reserved the room for 2 nights, mostly because I couln't get a flight out the day I arrived or the next. But that changed - a seat opened up on a flight that would hopefully depart the evening of my 2nd day. As I headed to the airfield, I left the key at the front desk, asking them to hold the room (which I thought I had already paid for). I would be back in case the plane did not fly. I told them I would call them to release the room if we could fly (which we did). They never charged me for that 2nd night, even though I cluttered up the room until almost 4 oclock that afternoon.. ...
