This was my family's destination over the 4th of July week for the last 37 years. With 3 generations from 4 different families totaling 30+ people who have been attending each year. We have different levels of income attending so this has been a decent choice due to the beach access and inexpensive rates. However, we have put up with many discomforts over the years in order to accommodate our families' tradition.
Due to poor management we have now been told we can no longer book our normal annual trip. Management gave us the option for the 30+ of us to all move our vacation week up a week. We were informed they will no longer accommodate our vacation the week of the 4th claiming there are others who may want to book at the end of the summer. Personally, I am happy to find a new place for our vacation for the reasons below.
Over the many years I have stayed in every room the Beachcomber has to offer. There is truly only 1 room worth paying to stay in. The beds are hard with very cheap mattresses, all rooms smell of mold, the plumbing is a continued problem, we always have some maintenance person needing to come out during our stay, the furniture is old and worn out, couches smell of other peoples sweat and look dirty, there is painted over rust on the appliances, the bathrooms are extremely dated with very little updates since originally built, the dishes are very old and stained, pots and pans are cheap and food sticks to them, the walls are solid but you can hear every move the people above you make if on the 1st floor.
The outside is fairly decently kept up with the exception of the old shuffleboard that hasn't been updated in about 20 years. The cleaning crew ladies are all very nice and several of them we have known for years. The Manager has always been difficult since she has been in her role. We try to avoid her as much as possible. If you are a smoker it is not allowed anywhere on the property expect for outside by the trash cans and under the windows of 2 rooms. If you stay in those rooms you can put up with the smokers out there at all hours of the night and smell their smoke. Even electric cigarettes are now being band from the property. Lights out and fans off at dark so bring your flashlights and fans if you want to play cards or games in the outdated common area.
If you are looking for a cheap place to stay on the beach you have found the place. Bring your air fresheners, your own pillows, a thick mattress pad, fans, and much more. Be prepared to get what you...
Read moreStayed here last summer and the unimaginable happened. Our first night there, just after 1am I hear a door open and noises coming from the living room. I jump out of bed and run out of the bedroom to see the front door wide open and a man and woman shining lights and looking into the apt. Thank God I had the foresight to have my son move a large recliner in front of the door when I realized they open outwards and have no chain or way to secure it from inside, before we went to bed. The woman asked me if I was staying there and became belligerent stating that her aunt and uncle owned the place! Obviously she had her own key because no one is available for check-ins after 3pm. Finally she huffed and said it would have to be worked out in the morning and they left. Of course I didn't sleep much the rest of the night and then of all the audacity, the office manager calls me at 9 and, very apologetically, tells me that there was a scheduling mistake and that I have to pack up and be out of the room by 10am! I had already paid in full ahead of time and had chosen that apt because it was the only 2 bedroom available. I told her that I knew it was the owner's niece and that clearly the owner's were at fault for not making her an actual reservation and removing the availability from the website. The office manager was very nice and extremely apologetic and I didn't want to take it out on her. She offered us our pick of any other available apt or even two apts, if I wanted to let my teen boys stay in their own, to which I had to say, Are you serious? people walked into my room in the middle of the night and you think I'm going to put my kids in their own room?! I eventually had to pick a room and move. They refunded 2 of our 3 night stay, I never got an apology from the actual owner, and the niece enjoyed her time by the pool screaming into her cell phone and acting quite the diva. If you are a single mom, or literally anyone who does not enjoy strangers letting themselves into your hotel room in the middle of the night, then this is not the...
Read moreMy family and I have been visiting the Beachcomber for 39 years. We come 2 or 3 times every year. Needless to say we love it! This is a family place, not necessarily the place for you if you want to stay up all night and get drunk. Sea turtles come ashore and lay their eggs along the beach here during their season, THIS is why there is a lights out rule every night! The lights at night confuse the turtles trying to come on shore to lay their eggs. MY family and I are more than happy to oblige. We make our reservations a year in advance to ensure we can come, and I assure you, if the pillows stunk We would not continue to visit! Over the years I have seen improvements made to all of the rooms as well as the grounds on an annual basis. New paint, appliances, bathroom upgrades and the pool have all been renovated. I will admit that years ago when people were allowed to smoke it was off putting but now smoking is not allowed in the public areas or in the rooms. I am a native Floridian and a professional, I have visited many beachfront resorts, hotels and spas along Florida's coastline for both business and pleasure and this is the place I choose to keep coming back to. This is like a second home for myself, my three children and my parents. The bad reviews make me sad, however it means less competition on the 4th of July when we want...
