We had a great weekend at the lake. The road coming in is washboard gravel for 11 miles, one way. Our Subaru handled it just fine at 40mph (speed is the key). Might be rough for a small car. We came in on a Thursday at about 2pm and all but about 5 of the 53 campsites were already taken. I figured Thursday would be easy pickin's but it was nearly full. It did officially fill up only a few hours later. Really glad we didn't come in on Friday. With no reservations, you make the risk of making the drive up without knowing if there are sites available. There is a sign at the turn off in Tollgate that kind of says vacancy or no vacancy, but I would not rely on it. The campsites are pretty large and can accommodate many people, however, it's not very level terrain and it's somewhat hard to find good tent spots. Because of the dry weather, dust was an issue. Every step you take kicks up a bunch of dust and you develop what my wife calls "camp feet". Because of COVID-19, they shut off running water. Seems counter intuitive to me but this campground is managed by the federal government...so take that how you will. The vault toilets were hit or miss on cleanliness. With so many people and only one camp host, it would be a hard to job to maintain everything. That also includes managing the racket at night. Our neighbors decided to run their generator all night and had loud music until midnight. Thankfully, they didn't do that the next night. The walk around the lake is easy and relaxing. The weather was absolutely perfect. What made everything even better was the fact that there were tons of huckleberries all around our campsite. We must have picked three quarts. Due to the pandemic, they did lower the prices. The prices listed on the forest service website are the current actual prices and I posted a picture from the pay booth at the campground. The website doesn't clarify the difference between a single and a double campsite. So I took a picture from the pay booth that explains it. Basically, it all depends on how many cars/RVs/tents you will have. Lastly, I was not able to find a campground map anywhere on the internet, so I took a picture of the one that's posted at the pay booth for...

Summer 2024 camping trip was excellent! Our first time here, and it didn't disappoint. Beautiful crystal clear lake with a walking path all the way around. No bikes are allowed on the path. The campground was busy, but the sites were very private. Bathrooms are all throughout the campground - we lucked out with a flushable toilet and running water one near us, but there were some outhouse style ones, so just don't fall down the deep dark hole! Lots of reviews noted the washboard road coming in... Yes, it is WASHBOARD. Bumpy lumpy bumipty bump. It's probably 6-9 miles long. We survived just fine in a truck, keeping speed at 40 mph when no other cars were passing. Garbage didn't seem to be an issue during our stay. Was clean, and many huge garbage cans are provided throughout. There is a water spicket near each campsite. Also, some other things to note: NO CELL SERVICE VERY DUSTY, YOU CAN NOT ESCAPE IT UNLESS YOU BAIL IN THE LAKE NO CAMPFIRES ALLOWED (August) QUIET TIME 10PM-6AM (There's always those obnoxious ones who like to party into the wee hours, so bring earplugs if you don't want to hear the echos of lunatics!) -There is a parking area next to the lake if you don't want to hike from your campsite. It's a ONE WAY road loop around the campground, so you'll have to circle. Had a fun trip overall. Kids will be excited to go...

The campground itself is nice. There are a few cons. The pull through campsite we chose for our 23 ft trailer did fit but the site itself didn’t say that it was on an up hill. So we were not able to level out the trailer.

The garbages were all full and overflowing. Taking a nice stroll was not pleasant as the smell of garbage was strong.

We took kayaks and paddle boards but weren’t able to use them as the sheriff informed us we couldn’t go out because we didn’t have life jackets. Yet while walking around the lake we saw multiple kayakers and paddle boarders with NO life jackets on, hmmm.

We’ve been camping here for many years and have never had as many issues with the campground as much as we did this time....

It's a beautiful lake and has a nice walk around it (about one hour). There was one 30 to 40 foot muddy stretch that we barely managed to cross without falling in it. It was very crowded with picnickers and kayakers. About 5 miles of the road is like washboard. Very bumpy and some potholes! You can only go between 20 and 25 mph. When we got home, we discovered a lengthwise scrape on the passenger side from parking light to parking light. Hopefully, not by a human. Other than those items, it was a lovely day.
