This review is based off my experience as a SxS rider:
We came with another couple for the weekend and stayed in an RV spot. The first thing that surprised me was the pricing. Not only is it expensive, but pricing is different for women and men. Also, pricing changes with the seasons. One thing they do not tell you is if you keep your armband on until the next day, you receive $5 off the next day's riding pass. Luckily, the guy that helped us our second day told us about it and we were able to get the discount because we still had the previous day's band on our vehicle. Very nice of him. It would be nice for them to offer some sort of discount if you are camping there and riding multiple days, but nope. Same price everyday and you have to go to registration everyday you are there in order to get an armband to ride. The process is tedious and cuts into riding time since you have to stand in line forever waiting for an armband.
An important thing to know is if it rains, and they decide to close the trails for the day or close them early...you do not get any kind of refund or discount. Trails can only be ridden from 9am until 5:30pm. Very short amount of time for the amount you pay to ride.
The campground area could have used some updating. They had singlewide mobile homes for rent there that were rusted and very aged. The RV spots were good, and spaced pretty well. When we arrived, the power didn't work at our RV spot, but a maintenance person came and fixed it quickly, so no big deal. There are signs that tell everyone not to drive above 10 mph through the camp areas, but there were kids flying through the campgrounds on dirt bikes and atvs all day. Even after the posted 10pm "quiet time", so that was annoying. One kid circled our RV site on an ATV for over an hour while we were outside trying to relax and grill dinner.
The trails are short, and it takes no time to ride them all, so we became bored pretty quickly. There were a lot of trails that they did not allow SxS riders. It is definitely a place that caters to dirtbike riders. The Beginner Track and Woods Track were nice, and good practice for tactical driving. We did those multiple times. They have call boxes on the trails for emergencies, so that was a good thing to see. I like that they had a big area for kids who are learning to drive their machines, so it is a good place for families. We did encounter some rude and inconsiderate people while riding. One dirtbike rider ran into my friend's tire, and didn't apologize or anything. He just drove off. Employees there do not know anything about the trails, so we asked other riders about trails if we had questions.
It was nice that they had a pressure wash station for washing the mud from your vehicles, but each token costs $3 and only gets you 6 minutes of wash time. Definitely not long enough to wash a SxS, so that gets expensive quick.
Make sure you also have plenty of fuel when you come because the closest gas station is a pretty good drive away from the location. However, I do feel like the location is a good one since it is far away from residential areas and you don't have to worry about traffic.
Overall, the place is just "okay" and we probably won't be back anytime soon. If we do return, it would be for just a one day ride and not...
Read moreLet me start by saying that my wife and I had an absolute blast. We spent the entire day and rode for about 6 hours. Got stuck in the mud, raced on the drag strip and found what i could do on the sxs track on a dirt bike. The reason i give 3 stars. The trails are nothing like we expected and were told about. We rode the Woodlands trails all day and it was pretty much nothing but very hard, extremely compacted red clay. We saw videos from different people that were saying the trails were well manicured and taken care of rather routinely. When the compacted clay starts to have tire marks and resembles asphalt? Not so sure. We were expecting the trails to be a little easier to ride so that we could take our kids on them since we like doing trail rides and not tracks. There were younger kids out riding around on the trails, but they have had years of experience. They do have age and engine appropriate tracks for the younger kids, which is a plus. It helps keeping the ones that want to do wheelies and see how fast they can go through the parking lot away from your kids that are wanting to take their time. If you plan on going with your family and have no real experience with trail riding, I would be cautious. They have a beginner trail, A and B, but they're not really marked as well as the other trails and courses. If your kids have dirt bikes with little experience, I would not take them on the trails. My son has a KLX110 with off and on 2 years experience on it. Hes still a ways away from going. If you have kids with quads, and they know what throttle control is, have at it. The best way to go to Durhamtown with the whole family, is on a side by side. Everyone will get the same experience on the trails, the tracks, the mud pit, or the swamp loop. Lastly, they need to put a wash rack in or near the massive parking lot. After you finish riding for the day, you'll want to wash off all the fun you had on your bike or quad, and take a shower as well. But they are next to the lodge. If you're not camping there, you have to ride from the parking lot where you can load and unload your bikes. Then to the lodge to wash off your bike, then back to the parking lot to load up. Then drive whatever you came in covered in dirt and sweat back to the lodge to use the bath house to shower then you can leave. Not sure if they do this for easier maintenance, or keep a closer eye on things or what. But it would nice to have some pressure washing stations and some sort of shower area nearer the parking lot, but that's just me being in the mind of exhaustion and not wanting to do all the back and forth. Just wanting it all right there. We will be going back, I just hoped for a little more on what was presented about the care of the trails and tracks. It will be a while until my kids are ready to ride there and learn more about...
Read moreMy family and I have been going to Durhamtown for quite a long time (over 10 years). There's pros and cons.
Pros: The park is ginormous, and there is a lot to ride. Whether you're on an ATV, dirt bike, or SXS, you can have a lot to do within the park. There's so many trails and tracks that I feel that every rider gets a great experience. I would also recommend going on a race weekend once. If so, the place will be busy, but watching the races are really enjoyable. The cabin selections are great, and it makes visiting with friends and family a blast. Over the recent years, they've also increased their attention to the tracks and trails. I'd recommend following their Instagram to see when they modify the park. They also update their Instagram when they refurbish tracks. Additionally, one time we had a cabin where our coffee machine wasn't working, and they fixed that right away with a brand new coffee machine within minutes of complaining. The pro shop also has a little bit of everything, which is very nice if you visit and you forget something. The staff is also overall friendly, and they seem like friends rather than people that just work there.
Cons: The location is sort of in the middle of nowhere, there's a Dollar General somewhat nearby for groceries. However, I would recommend bringing a bunch of groceries with you if you stay for a couple of days. Moreover, there's not a bunch of cell service, but it does depend on your cell provider. But this isn't a huge complaint though since it's nice to get away from technology every now and again. A big complaint is the soaring of prices. The prices for 1 day riding is overall the same. However, if you plan on staying multiple days, they make you pay for every single day with only a $5 dollar discount after the first day. Additionally, they only give you a $5 discount if you only ride for half day (after 2pm). Which if you do the math, that is actually less than a half day of riding since most of their tracks and trails open at 9am, and close at 5:30-6:30pm. This can quickly add up if you plan on coming for a trip, so get ready to spend a LOT of money if you come for more than one day. I believe my family used to have a great deal where we could ride any day within a year for all of us for like $300-$600 (I can't remember). But now they want you to pay for each day, so if you ride for more than 14 days within a year, you're already over the maximum for that deal. Another complaint is the service of the restaurant, they didn't really take orders to heart and just kinda made it the way they wanted to.
Overall, I'll still probably ride here, but things have changed over the past couple of years. The prices are a major complaint, but the park is still great for riding for all skill levels. Would recommend, but be wary of the prices, especially if you're...
