Juniper Campground in Theodore Roosevelt National Park’s North Unit is a hidden gem for campers looking for a peaceful yet scenic retreat. Based on our experience, one of the standout benefits of this campground is the ease of access—no long wait times or difficult reservation systems to deal with, even in 2024. We were able to pull in and secure a stunning riverside campsite without a reservation, which added to the spontaneous charm of the trip.
The location offers spectacular views and is surrounded by the natural beauty of the park, with wildlife sightings being a regular occurrence. Bison, longhorn cattle, and prairie dogs roam nearby, bringing you up close to nature without ever leaving the campground. As a bonus, the campground is a perfect starting point for various hikes, including trails that begin right from the campground itself.
Our riverside spot was serene, with views of the Little Missouri River and a beautiful sunset to cap off each day. The campground itself offers simple but sufficient amenities, including picnic tables, fire pits, and a peaceful environment perfect for those who want to connect with nature.
If you're looking for a camping experience where you can immerse yourself in the park's beauty without the hassle of reservations or overcrowding, Juniper Campground is ideal. The combination of wildlife, hiking opportunities, and river views makes it a must-visit destination in Theodore Roosevelt National Park. Highly recommend for nature lovers and anyone looking to explore the North Unit in...
Read moreVerizon speeds were 10Mbps download but nothing usable on the upload side (0.1). No usable T-Mobile or AT&T data. Verizon and T-Mobile were using a roof mounted Pepwave antenna and ATT was via phone. Depending on which site you are in, Starlink would be viable.
This place had a good state park-esque vibe meaning that it wasn't crowded to the gills and full of amenities/stores like many national park campgrounds. Id stay at the CCC campground up the road unless you really need shade/showers/flush toilets - the view is better.
The access road to get here is paved but bumpy. We arrived in the evening of July 4th and there were still spots available so I'd expect that it must never fill up all the way. It's a one way loop, so half the sites end up putting you in the wrong side but the host said we could loop the other way to have the camp side on the camp side. All sites are paved and in decent shape. Ours was reasonably level but the tree over it had an aphid infestation and they coated everything with poop.
There's a mix of shade depending on the site for solar. There's a pay station and you can fill out CC info.
There's a couple of sites backed up against the river that would be the best if you can snag one for the view.
Potable water fill is available at the dump station at the campground entrance. There's at least one potable water spigot in the campground...
Read moreI hardly ever rate places this low, but we had such a poor experience at this campground. When we first got to the campground, it was raining, and a buffalo was wandering through! It seemed so peaceful and perfect- even with the rain. When we came back later on in the day around 4, a construction crew had taken over the area. A worker even parked in our taken campground site. There were no warning signs that this would be happening. If we had known a loud asphalt crew would be working the area for hours until 7:30 PM, we would not have stayed. At one point, I had to get back in our car because it was so loud. The workers were back before 7 AM too. Secondly, there’s no running water- which luckily I read about on their website beforehand. But what I don’t understand is why the bathroom that has running water is “closed for winterization” in June. I’m sure this campground is great, but we happened to come...
