Before I being I have to say this...if you go into this motel with the expectation that you are walking into a JW Marriott then you are going to be highly disappointed.
We were making a weekend trip to the area for my nieces H.S. open house and needed an inexpensive place to stay that allowed pets. After checkout out several different websites to get an idea of different places we came across Sunset Lodge. According to what I found it was rated the top place to stay in the area by customer reviews. So, after looking at the prices I booked us a room.
Some rooms have been renovated and others have not. Mine was not. But I don't mind that at all. I figured that those are the rooms that allow pets as they have some older finishes. The reservation that I had was for 1 queen bed. When I walked into the room there was a table with 2 chairs right underneath the window that faced the parking lot and US-41. The bed was next to that with a night stand on each side of the bed. Beyond that was a coat rack, microwave, mini fridge, and the bathroom. Overall first impression was the place was cute, and what I had expected for the area that I was in. Just a cute roadside motel!
The bathroom was a little small, but nothing that I couldn't deal with. After all, I am not going to live there for the rest of my life. I will say the shower set up was strange and made it difficult for me, but most of the time I have issues as I am 6'4".
The TV was mounted to the wall in the corner which gave more floor space, and I am glad they chose to do that as it would have been cramped if they did not. The thermostat on the wall controlled the baseboard heating only. The room did have an A/C unit in the wall by the bathroom door. It was an older unit and seemed to struggle at times to keep up with our demands...but since the warmest it got while we were in town was 70 degrees, it really wasn't needed a ton.
The room door did not have a deadbolt but a chain as well as a locking door knob. I never once felt unsafe or that someone was going to come and get into the room. The TV selection was pretty good and gave a wide variety of channels to entertain yourself when it was time to hang out in the room for the evening. They do offer a breakfast in the morning, but it's strictly a grab and go style with some fruit and donuts, muffins, etc. The breakfast does come with the room...and it's better than nothing. There is a restaurant right next to the motel if you want something more than a muffin.
The staff that we encountered during our stay were beyond friendly. They gave us extra blankets and pillows when we asked, cleaned our room after we left and did a great job, and just were outstanding people. I am pretty sure that the lady that checked us in on Thursday was one of the owners and she was great. Told me about all the different events going on in Escanaba and how to get around by using a map they have in the office.
The overall amenities are few as there is no pool, continental breakfast, business center, etc. BUT the overall value of the room, the friendliness of the staff outweigh all the "extras" I may have missed out on. I will definitely stay here again! OH and a great bonus...they don't charge an extra fee for pets when you bring...
Read moreI recently moved from Alberta to Michigan with my two cats, and found this place in the search for a pet friendly near Highway 2.
I called in advance to book directly through them, and to confirm that pets are indeed welcome.
The hotel itself is a small Mom and Pop style roadside motel, it was very easy to find, the rooms are very reasonably priced, and they didn't charge any extra pet fees.
The rooms themselves do vary a little bit, my dad and I each had one of the single Queen rooms. I had one of the older rooms that hasn't been renovated yet, it could use a paint job, but the room itself was clean. My dad had a room with renovated bathroom and a nicely sized shower. It isn't the most quiet location but for the price I really can't complain.
In summary it's a great little place for the price you pay, and very affordable.
Pros Pet friendly, no extra pet fees. (However if you stay with a pet, please clean up after your pet). Cheap/reasonably priced rooms. Free coffee, and fruit in the mornings The rooms did not smell smoked like many budget motels I've stayed in. Friendly and helpful staff. Clean. They do have some family sized rooms.
Cons The rooms they haven't gotten around to renovating are a bit dated, but this is just esthetics. It is a little bit noisy, due to being on a main road. The mattress I had was a little on the hard side, but some people do prefer...
Read moreI asked for a room closer to the family restaurant to walk to, I should have asked for a room with 2 double beds. Our room was nice and clean but just too cramped for my taste. The door hit the bed when you walked in. The area by the bathroom has a table and chairs, microwave and frig. The bathroom was renovated but it lacked ample shelf space and there was no fan. You had to ope the window to vent the steam. I made the choice to chose a room with one bed, so that I on me but I will say looking at the pictures I thought it was larger. Good thing I brought an eye mask as each room had a light outside on all night long and there wasn't black out curtains. We were going to stay 4 nights but we did everything we wanted in 2 days so we left early. ALWAYS BOOK DIRECTLY WITH ANY PLACE YOU STAY! I was able to get a refund for the remaining 2 days at I booked directly with the lodge. It worked for what we needed for 2 days. The room was clean, the bed was good. I have a bad back so it wasn't the greatest for me. My hubby slept well! All in all it was...
