Excellent campground for winter(year round) camping. Beautiful location within walking distance of the lower falls.
The DNR if you place a reservation ahead of time will make sure your site is cleared of snow and mark the site with a cone. The sites mostly have 30 amp hookups with a couple of 50 amp sites that are available in the winter.
The campground is right across the street from the snowmobile trail and there were people there snowshoeing as well. A few miles up the road were plenty of cross country skiing trails weaving through the woods.
My only hangup with this state park was the lack of any shower facilities open for use during the winter months. Keep this in mind that you will be going without showers even if you go to the Upper Falls park restroom for running water and a less chilly toilet seat on the bum there is not a shower available. I hope in the future the park is able to work towards a new shower building like several of the Lower Peninsula campgrounds have...
Read moreThis is a very cool park. I was so stunned I didnt even grab any pics till I cooled off. It was $11USD to get it, and I got a pass to go in any Michigan State park all day, which is cool, because the Upper Falls is right up the road a bit further, and you WILL want to see both. Im having deja vu. There are also plenty of other state parks right nearby to check out, so the pass is certainly worth it! There were quite a bit of people there, not packed though, it is quite the attraction. There is a wonderfully accessible walk way up to the falls. There are also shuttles for those that cant walk up. Up is the hard part, comming down is great! There is a kayak/canoe launch with a nice staircase and track to bring your boat down. Haha, enjoy. Peace,...
Read moreNice enough campground, but definitely not the nicest state park we’ve stayed at. Pros: -Huge sites that are mostly flat -Ours was nicely wooded as were most -No trees in the way of slide outs Cons: -Only 3 showers per gender. This was maddening as the men’s rarely had a line and the women’s constantly had a line. -Showers rarely had hot water. I got 1 hot shower out of the 7 nights I showered. -No “cut through” to the water or bathrooms. On busy weekends you’re either cutting through someone’s site or walking the entire campground. -Sites are dirt. Fine with no rain, but this would be a nightmare in the rain. -In the spring/early summer the mosquitoes are insane. Like they’ll swarm you the second you step out...
