Edited: a refund showed up in my account after leaving a two star review, which shows the owners actually care about their business. I am adjusting my review to 4 stars because I’m satisfied with the resolution I got. I hope they can get things dialed in and I will give them another chance. It is a brand new business, so I’m going to give them grace and give hoedown hill another shot. Thank you to the management at hoedown hill.
Original review: So yeah, the first day was definitely pretty rough. It was average at least an hour wait per run. The facilities were nice and employees were very nice. The concept is great. That is worth two stars. Everything else was a little rough. I think the owners of this place could benefit from observing comparable facilities. To compare: The copper mountain tubing hill is 60 bucks for the hour and you will get at least 8 runs in that amount of time. Copper mountain efficiently books the amount of people that is correct for the facility they have. There is never a long line at copper for the lift or for the runs. The amount of people booked per session at hoedown hill was WAYYYYYY too many people. Keystone offers a 5 run tubing pass for 68 dollars, so paying $60 bucks to get only two runs in was not a great value. When it came time for our second run, there were many lane closures and a couple members of our party actually didn’t take their second run because they were a bit uneasy about the lane conditions. Overall I was pretty disappointed with our experience, before we even went to the hill the ticketing office people were sending out 50% off coupons because I think they knew they screwed up. I was later issued a refund which was cool, and shows the owners are addressing the complaints they received. I think a more elegant solution would have been to give people 50% of their money back for that session. Or, maybe just have been honest and tell people that the tubing run isn’t quite ready and they were oversold, and tried to reschedule people. I can understand that place is probably hemorrhaging money to get setup and is trying to turn a profit, but they went too big too fast and it kind of took away from the overall experience. It just pains me that they didn’t at least go see how other resorts in the area are running their tubing hills. A little bit of market research will help them for their future operations. Also: wear some beater shoes/boots on warm days because the mud is a problem. Maybe some of those rubber kitchen mats they have in dish washing areas could help. I’ve seen those used before. If they can increase value to the customer and focus on improving customer safety and comfort, hoedown hill will provide a memorable...
Read moreI'm here to post an honest review of my experience at Hoedown Hill as an intermediate/advanced snowboarder with a kid beginning to learn to ski.
When I first learned that this was being built, I was intrigued and hopeful that it could be something fun for my family, as we live just 5 minutes away. Imagine my disappointment when they released pricing last year, with $70 lift tickets for a single-run ski hill with less than 200 feet of elevation! They quickly cut the price in half to $35 due to public outcry, but that definitely showed what the owner's primary intention was. (For comparison, Snowy Range is $49/adult $30/child for a weekday ticket, and is a legit ski area less than 2 hours from Windsor).
After the price cut, I figured I'd probably have to give it a try at least once this year. I got my son's snowboard rental through Mountain Rentals, which is partnered with Hoedown Hill with a 20% rental discount. That experience was great.
Check in was easy, and the decor around and inside the lodge is very nice. We walked over to the top of the ski run and took our first run. The trail map shows green, blue, and black lines, but the reality is that the entire thing is a green bunny hill, with a few slightly steeper bits on each side, but still very much green terrain. There were two terrain parks with a variety of sliders and rails. They were well groomed and rode well. At least one dedicated tabletop jump or a kicker would be nice, but for an area this size, I was surprised they had as many features as they did. The terrain parks were pretty much the only thing that kept me on the mountain for the 2.5 hours I was there. For anyone who isn't interested in hitting the terrain park, you are stuck doing lap after lap of a relatively short bunny hill. This was fine for my son for whom this was only his second time snowboarding, but for anyone above beginner level, after an hour or so you are going to be ready to leave.
In the end, I'd say this is a great place for an absolute beginner to go for their first or second time, but beyond that, it's worth the only slightly more expensive trip to Snowy Range or Echo Mountain where you can get a full day of riding.
One other tip I'd recommend is to not go if the temperature is going to go above 40-45 degrees. Once the snow gets warm, you will have no speed and the pitch of the hill is such that you will have difficulty getting enough speed to get all...
Read moreThis is a great place for a beginners snowboarder or skier or someone who wants a tree free environment to practice their skills! The tubing runs are abundant!
They have a ski school with excellent teachers either in group setting or 1:1 !
They have a green run, blue run, black run! Their snow is pretty icey and groomed so to improve those skills this is the place!
The ticketing booth is green and the ladies there are working out the kinks of how things work. Plenty friendly and kind though.
The owners have spent a lot of money on the decor of making it country which is a different theme than most ski resorts. A lot of money went into supporting this theme.
They have staff milling around everywhere with intention to help. All their conveyer carpet operators were attentive, supportive and had a friendly good attitude! Also good teachers on how to avoid falling! They have excellent tunes to listen to while you ride up!
I would suggest some more signage for where one is supposed to go to "hit the slopes" from the parking lot and signage on the slopes to understand what's what. There is quite a walk from the parking lot to the slopes. I wish there was a ski rack next to the porta potty vs setting them against the fence. I also wish I could ski there vs taking my skis off to walk to the potty. I wish at the top landing somewhere there was some benches to sit and apply gear or adjust gear or simply rest. One has to walk all the way back to the lodge which is a ways - to sit down.
This place apparently had a rough opening weekend but I didn't have to wait at all to get a ride up and in 1 hour made tons of runs - depends how fast you board or ski. There are also jumps and fun options like that.
Overall it's a great place and we will return! I highly recommend!
My husband took a lesson from Hannah ski instructor and she was the bomb!
