Firstly I would say that we enjoyed our stay at Field Station and it met our needs, however I would also agree with some other reviewers that the photos on the website aren’t wholly representative of the set up -this is a remodelled motel and as such the look/feel of the place and the sound proofing is at it would have been in its motel days. Firstly the positives~we loved the entrance lobby and our room, the aesthetic is minimalist with a hiking, climbing vibe, it was very clean and our room was spacious with comfy beds and gorgeous linens. Lots of cool details like the ability to ‘shop the room’ via a QR code and a carabiner toilet roll holder. Our room had doors opening onto a communal fire pit which was a nice touch. |Moving on to the more disappointing features of our stay … the casual feel of the Field Station may also be its flaw, the staff are friendly (warmly welcomed by Todd) but we were given the impression that they were finding their feet, as if the place had just opened its doors. We were pleased to see that there was a menu up on the wall with drinks, pizzas, burgers, salads etc so after going out for a drive we returned to order some food but were told they were out of EVERYTHING. A member of staff recommended a bar down the road ‘Snakebite’ so we went there instead. The next morning we went to order some breakfast but many of the items were out of stock. For us, the most disappointing element was the temperature of the pool, it was so cold. Everyone was sat around the pool on loungers but no one was in the pool. Realise this is the desert and maybe later on in the season heating the pool isn’t necessary but in April it was too cold to swim which was a shame. The hot tub however, was boiling hot. |Coffee is available to buy but it would be a nice touch if a complimentary coffee pot was available at least in the mornings. |We found a sandwich shop (The Dez) at twentynine palms entrance to the Park and bought a packed lunch to take in with us but it would have been great if we could’ve have ordered/picked up a lunch to go from Field Station. ||If you want a good base for visiting Joshua Tree National Park then I would recommend Field Station, just keep expectations realistic and have alternative...
Read moreThe room was large - king room (rm 2127), I liked the design, very open floor concept and everything was essentially brand new. Can see under the bed, no blocky furniture. Rock climber design was cool. Stayed oct 27-29th.
Checked in close to midnight the first night of our stay. Sheet under covers had some dark stain as if it was brushed up against something dirty, decided just to lysol spray it because we were tired. Saw a roach within the hr and couldn't sleep the rest of the night. Didn't see anything else that night. Notified staff in the morning and they apologized and said they would let maintenance know.
Next day, left for the day at around 11amish, went to explore JTNP, had dinner, came back to hotel to rest before driving back out to JTNP for night photography. When we got back to our room at around 8:30pm, we found 5 roaches, all diff sizes, under 4 separate pairs of shoes that we had left on the floor. So disgusting. We stomped/killed them all and text the property to come clean it up. They came and swept/wiped the floor down, apologized, and offered to comp any snacks/drinks we wanted the following morning. Snacks..! -_-
They also asked if we wanted to get moved to a diff building/room/level. We declined because we had 1 hr to rest before leaving for the night, on our last night there. Staff said that we arrived on the day when the weather shifted to cold weather, and since we were on a floor level room, that the bugs were looking for a place to come and stay warm. They claimed it was the first time they encountered a guest with this issue. (I just saw on Expedia reviews that someone also encountered the issue earlier in October and notified management- so there goes that)
Overall was a bit grossed out, I have stayed in many hotels throughout the yrs. Found 1 roach in a hotel once and now this is my second experience with roaches (plural) in my room. Thanks for the snacks though? We really wanted to like this place but too grossed out to come back. Luckily, we always keep our bags zipped up so we didn't freak out about roaches in our items, but after we saw the roaches, we put out shoes in bags and hung...
Read moreFor me personally, Field Station Joshua Tree was the absolute best hotel I stayed in during our entire US trip. I was immediately drawn to its simple, pragmatic design and structure. It felt like everything was exactly as it should be – nothing unnecessary, just well-executed simplicity. The cleanliness was impeccable, and the rooms were wonderfully spacious. I also really appreciated the thoughtful layout with a separate toilet and bathroom, which was so convenient for the three of us sharing the room.
The outdoor spaces were equally impressive. The patio and garden were beautifully designed with a minimalist aesthetic, complete with a welcoming fireplace and comfortable chairs. I also noted and appreciated the presence of recycling bins throughout the property, highlighting the hotel's commitment to sustainability. Technically, the hotel felt very high standard, and I admired their ecologic approach, evident in their consideration of sustainable energy and the use of eco-friendly materials.
The reception area was also a highlight, featuring a comfortable sitting area with games and helpful information about the local area, as well as a small but lovely cafe. The inclusion of a shop selling outdoor and hiking gear was a fantastic touch that I particularly enjoyed. The entire feel of the hotel was refreshingly different from a typical US hotel – more akin to a European style in its design and functionality.
However, what truly stood out were the beds. I honestly believe they were the most comfortable beds I have ever slept in! The pillows were also perfect, and I had the best sleep of my entire two-week US trip in this hotel.
The location was also ideal for our itinerary, providing easy access to Palm Springs, Pioneer Town, and Joshua Tree National Park, all within a 30-45 minute drive. I would absolutely stay at Field Station Joshua Tree again without hesitation and am now keen to explore other branches of this hotel group. I was so impressed with their design, functionality, and, most importantly, those...
