During our January stay at this homestay, we encountered several challenges that impacted our experience. The weather was notably cold, with temperatures around 12°C (53.6°F), and the accommodations lacked adequate heating. The bungalows were not insulated, resulting in indoor temperatures mirroring the chilly outdoors. Additionally, the absence of a communal indoor area or fireplace meant we spent most of our time on the terrace, feeling cold.
The establishment operated more like a guesthouse than a traditional homestay, as the host family did not reside on-site. When we expressed concerns about the cold and considered shortening our stay, the initial solution offered was an extra blanket. It was only after mentioning that I was feeling unwell that a fire was made to provide some warmth.
Meal experiences were inconsistent; while lunch was very good, dinner did not meet the same standard, possibly due to being prepared by different individuals.
A significant issue was the overcharging on various services. Despite agreeing on a bungalow price of 550,000 VND, we were charged 600,000 VND. The hiking tour was agreed upon at 400,000 VND, but we were billed 250,000 VND for half a day. Most surprising was the taxi fare to the location, which was 700,000 VND each way from Km17—three times the cost of the bungalow.
Given these experiences, we advise future guests to confirm all prices in advance to avoid unexpected charges. Additionally, be prepared for cold weather conditions during winter months, as heating provisions may...
Read moreWe stayed at Móng Ngựa Homestay during a private family trekking trip (with a tour agency) around Hà Giang mid April 2025. As Vietnamese speakers, we were able to connect easily with our hosts, Quyên and his family, who were warm, thoughtful, and genuinely welcoming. The accommodation is simple, as expected from a family-run homestay, but it’s clear that every effort was made to ensure our comfort with the resources available. I recommend insect repellent and your own toiletries/ towels if possible.
While some of us went hiking (along with our tour guide and also the hosts), our mothers were taken on a gentle motorbike tour of the surrounding area—an unexpected and much-appreciated gesture. Meals were home-cooked using fresh, locally grown ingredients, and their chẩm chéo was particularly memorable.
We joined Quyên and his daugther on a short walk and later a full-day trek with another member in his family, enriched by conversations about Red Yao traditions and daily life. As Kinh visitors, we found the experience both refreshing and meaningful. This is a place I would warmly recommend—for the views, the meals, and above all, to support the wonderful...
Read moreIf you want to get away from the hustle and bustle, and see the real Vietnam tucked away from the tourists, you must come here. A fantastic location, wonderful hosts and fascinating, simple food. We took the night bus from Hanoi to Ha Giang and got down at the Tan Quang intersection and took a car that we hired. After about 2 hours drive through the mountains we reached here. We didn't want to go for the Ha Giang loop, but stay in one place, hike around a bit; and have the quiet and peace for ourselves. Couldn't have been a better choice. If you come in a group it's more cost effective (the transport in particular). It was an amazing experience to spend a few days here. Hope to come...
