I did not enjoy my stay at Meo Vac Clay House. It is important to know that this is the hostel of choice for large group tours of young backpackers, so it is very busy and noisy until late in the night. It was my worst sleep in Hà Giang.
The whole village is a fake ethnic village, built solely to hold the 15 or so homestays that are there. There is nothing authentic about it, it is just a big party town built into the Hà Giang loop.
There is almost no soundproofing in the dorm area or the attached private rooms, so unless you spring for a superior suite in a different building, you will be woken up until about 1am with people stumbling in after partying. And then by 6-7am the Vietnamese tour guides are up speaking loudly so you’re back up again. The washrooms were not very clean either.
The food was ok but all three members of my group had upset stomachs within 24 hours of our stay there. We opted not to get the family-style dinner because we didn’t feel like cramming into the same room as 75 other people, but unfortunately many of the other menu items were not available.
Personally, I would not return to Meo Vac, or any other homestay in the area. But if you are looking for a big party place, it might be the right...
Read moreWe were in awe of the location & space of Meovac Clayhouse when we arrived & got a private room for 2 nights.
However, we were really disappointed with the service as it felt like they'd rather you not be there. We arrived in the afternoon and were starving but they were not very helpful & made no effort to recommend anything to us (we later realised they have an on-site shop with snacks & drinks which they did not offer either) Most of the homestays were stayed at before Meovac Clayhouse were so helpful and hospitable so we were rather surprised by that.
A lot of the items on their menu were not available in their restaurant for dinner as they were saving those dishes for the tour groups. The food was also quite expensive for Vietnam's standard.
We were also not given any options for breakfast although there were plenty of options for the tour groups. The room we booked was supposed to come with either a buffet or ala-carte buffet for breakfast & there were cockroaches on the table whenever we had a meal at the restaurant.
It is such a shame as this place has so much potential. There are lots of other homestays in this compound that seemed more hospitable & at a cheaper rate so we recommend...
Read moreLocal guests: beware of surcharge fraud and horrible receptionist’s attitude.
Location is good. All staffs are excellent and friendly, except the girl behind the reception.
The listing & confirmation indicated check-in @ 2pm, check-out @ 12pm, but they privately sent a message with different check-in (4pm) and check-out (11am) time slots? Beware!!! Read further. I asked for some direction (left or right) to the boat pier, but the girl behind the reception was trying to sell boat tickets. She even warned us of oversold tickets, which was not true during the period. We booked a 2-night stay, but the next morning before we went out, she impolitely called us up and informed that her homestay policy (???) required daily check-out and check-in, meaning guests had to return the room on a daily basis; otherwise there would be an hourly surcharge from 11am to 4pm??? Dinner was exactly the same for 2 nights. She promised 12-course menu but in fact, there was only 8 (1 dish of...
