Little Cat Ba deserves nothing less than four stars due to their wonderful accommodating manner and desire to make your stay as wonderful as possible. The staff went as far as accompanying me and my partner to the hospital after a particularly bad reaction to an insect bite and made sure we were okay as best they could. Wonderful people and for us western foreigners, their english was excellent.
They were also excellent with planning activities and make the pricing clear which makes it lovely to do the actual tours and activities safe in the knowledge that payment is handled through the hotel staff.
Unfortunately the hotel does not match up to the staff.
Given the location in the world and the climate, some wildlife is to be expected. Unfortunately all of the rooms seemed to be occupied by ants. Not an uncommon thing in this part of the world but the sheer volume of them and the fact that using the A/C (they seemed to have an entry point into the room via the A/C) would literally spray a steady stream (1 every few minutes) of ants onto the bed.
The first room we were given had mold up the wall which the bed was against and even the replacement room had evidence of recently painted over mold. Again, trying not to be too hard as it was rainy season but the problem was clearly not being addressed appropriately, during the quieter season is when I would expect the necessary renovations to be done. Also due to the rainy season, one morning we were unable to get replacement towels as the previously washed ones had not had a chance to dry. I would expect any hotel to have a decent collection of 'extra' towels for these situations. Not to mention the room running out of water twice due to the water supply not being topped up regularly by the staff.
The staff go to the market each day to get the ingredients they need. We were not advised of this and found that several mornings we would go down for the breakfast only to be told that there were no eggs or they had run out of bread... We learnt by the third day that you had to tell them the afternoon before what you would eat the following day.
The bikes they have are from one of the rental places in the centre of town, it is crucial you get a top up if you are planning on any drives longer than simply into town or the nearby beaches. Biking around the island is definitely one of the highlights.
The rooms are cleaned daily but a little look around and you will see that the edges of the ceilings, tops of light switches and many other parts have become the playground of insects or the waste left behind by them. Though well intentioned cleaning happens regularly, the rooms clearly lack a deep clean which is a necessity in such a climate to prevent the mold and the permanent residence of insects.
Now for all I am saying, this place is genuinely a lovely location. Next to a pond/lake/slow-flowing section of river, there are butterflies in the mornings, a wonderful view from the rooms and an excellent location to sit and have breakfast. They have dogs and cats and if you are a fan, they are a lovely addition to the staff. Not to mention being one of the only places in the world you can observe a rare breed of bats who catch fish from the water at night.
It is just the right distance from the main town almost perfectly between the main street and the national park.
A step-up from a backpackers place, but by no means a boutique hotel though with a bit of hard work they could comfortably double their prices and have a really exceptional place there.
I enjoyed my stay overall and could not have asked for a host with a better heart. Hopefully they will improve the actual...
Read moreThe hotel staff and the owner were really friendly and we could talk like friends. When I was waiting for them to check the room, I saw cats. They had 5 cats. That was amazing. I quickly found me hugging one of their big cats and actually it was really easy for me to be friend with cats. The hotel owner told me that they would open their restaurant so that day was actually the opening of their restaurant, so they offered me to have dinner. I was lucky and it was nice to me. The dinning room was on the first floor and my room was on 2nd floor. It was not a big hotel but the atmosphere was really nice and quiet. At the moment they opened the door, I fell in love with their hotel room. I've never seen any hotel room like that before. There were books inside the room. They decorated the hotel with many small little porcelains and there was no TV in the room. There was a big window view straight to the lake. From the balcony, I could see the lake, and there were some little cutie chairs outside. I thought it was really nice to enjoy a fresh morning there. I really enjoyed the dinner there. The food was nice...
Read moreClean rooms and friendly staff 3 stars for a couple reasons. The shower room has a gap at the ceiling for air circulation . But since it’s attached to your room you can hear everything downstairs... dogs barking, yelling and partying next door at the back packing hostel. We only had breakfast here when we needed to. It is very minimal and we found the coffee quite difficult to drink. Unless you rent a motor bike you are confined to the hotel with at least a thirty minute walk to town. Would recommend renting a motor bike from the hotel. When we received it we were told to get a gas because it was given to us on empty. Be prepared to find a gas station. The cat ba ventures boat ride tour one day to ha long bay was worth the money. Overall a clean and safe place to stay. But if you’re looking for peace and quiet I would say we were woken up every night by barking and every night there’s noise from the hostel...
