This is an ancient fortress located high on the rocks, offering wide scenic views. The hiking trail to reach it is easy and partly goes through the forest. The distance from the main road is about 1.3 km one way. It’s also a good spot for taking photos. Trails: There are two main hiking options: From Akner village – a longer and more challenging trail. From the main road to Haghpat, near Dsevank Restaurant – an easier trail (approx. 1.3 km).

The castle was built by Ashot II in the 10th century. It was then gifted to the Archbishop of Haghpat, Hovhannes in 1233. It contained the church Surb Astvatzatin in its monastery Dsevank. The site was destroyed by Timurid invaders soon after. There is an Iron Age burial ground nearby.

A gorgeous structure with amazing panoramic views. The hike itself can be tricky but it is worth it. Google maps will take you to the wrong place. You need to drive to the village of Akner to get to the starting point (41.0908482, 44.6997233).
