Byron Bay Gateway Airport is a small, regional airport that offers a relaxed alternative to the larger and busier airports nearby. Its biggest advantage is convenience – located close to Byron Bay, it makes getting into town quick and easy, whether by car hire, shuttle, or taxi. For many travelers, this airport takes the stress out of flying. Check-ins are usually fast, security is straightforward, and the overall atmosphere is far more laid-back than city airports. Staff are generally friendly and helpful, which adds to the positive experience.

Another highlight is the scenic arrival and departure. On a clear day, the views of Byron’s coastline and hinterland are stunning, giving travelers a real sense of arrival before they even hit the ground. The facilities, while basic, are clean and well maintained. A small café provides coffee and snacks, and car rental services are available on site.

That said, there are some drawbacks. As a smaller regional airport, flight options are more limited compared to Gold Coast or Brisbane. Delays can also feel more inconvenient here, as there are fewer amenities to pass the time. Seating areas are adequate but not spacious, and food choices are limited to simple snacks rather than full meals. Travelers who are used to big airports with lounges and shops may find it lacking.

Overall, Byron Bay Gateway Airport is a solid choice if you value convenience and a stress-free start or finish to your trip. It won’t suit those expecting wide international connections or luxury facilities, but for what it is – a simple, friendly, and efficient regional airport – it does...

Make sure you have a GPS for directions to the airport, very poorly signposted. Carpark signage is not much better. Entering the terminal, I thought that I was going through a side door, then, had to go looking for a sign to departures. Really really poor. Security requested everything bar the kitchen sink to be taken off. I get it, however, regional airport security really need to lose one thing & find another. Lose the attitude. I understand your role in protecting all of us, but please, 99.9999999% of people are not doing anything with the intention of harming anyone. Please try to be a little more human, than making people feel like they are going through a checkpoint where they are trying to catch people out for the smallest thing. It makes everyone feel so uncomfortable. (You are not on Border Security, so dont act like you are). What you need to find is deodorant. You are dealing with people all day, at 7am in the morning, I would expect that the BO basher had not worn off yet. Inside the little airport, the departure area is ok. Bigger than Coffs Harbour, but, encompasses the departure gates as well, so, I expect when busy it is mayhem. (Coffs has a much better system and large departure lounge). I had plenty of time, with an early morning flight, however, given the poor signage and time spent at security, I would ensure more time if departing at a later time or during peak of...

I had a flight departing from Ballina airport with JETSTAR🤮.. of course the flight was delayed 3 hours. So with that 3 hours I decided to go 5 mins outside of the airport to get some food. I get a call much earlier than the flight was due saying that the plane has already departed. I am quite frankly shocked. When I got to the airport I was served by Jetstar worker Vanessa at the front desk. She was rude. Scoffed in my face when I politely asked why the plane left early without any notice. Vanessa told me I had to pay for a new flight then sent me to go outside the airport to find evidence of audio recordings from the PA’s so i could prove that the flight unfairly left without announcing. She lied. The place she sent us doesn’t hold audio recordings nor has it ever. A good worker should know basic information. When I came back to the front desk she had LEFT and gone HOME. I then had to wait 7 hours until I was able to book my tickets for the next flight and then had to wait and extra 3 hours for the flight. I am disgusted yet not surprised by jet stars...

Waiting area is small, and they don't have a port to charge anything if your battery is almost flat from traveling an hour to get to the airport unless you go to the toilet to do so. There is one cafe that helps you keep going till your flight. The screen that shows flight schedule is a bit small, for a person like me who wears glasses may find it difficult in reading and you have to squint your eyes to see. (I have thick glasses and astigmatism does not help) When I arrived, couldn't locate where the bus stop is because of the construction restricted area, so management should probably put a sign as travelling and transiting a few times does not help a person to have enough attention span to search. Other than that, pretty quick and easy.

This airport is privately owned and had a major upgrade a year ago. For years only had two flights a day nowadays the flights could depart in an hour. The updated building only allowed for one security screening lane and one body scanner through which everyone must pass. Needless to say noon existent planning, insufficient infrastructure and poor govt direction and oversight means that the security queue is diabolically long and slow - you'll be lucky to catch your flight if you have checked in an hour before your flight boards. IMHO don't bother flying in here. Quicker, more convenient and hospitable flying through gold coast airport. If I was the local MP I'd be ashamed of mess.
