A great display of items relevant to RAAF activity in the Riverina during WW2 and in latter years, of RAAF Base Wagga Wagga as a training centre for all things in the technical side of aviation. RAAF Base Wagga Wagga is the home of 1RTU, the recruit training unit for the RAAF. It is also home of the Training School for aviation technicians for the three services and there are displays showcasing work these trainees have done. The Heritage Centre is open Saturday through Thursday from 10am until 4pm and entry is free. At this time sales of souvenirs and other items require cash payment. I notice in an earlier review there was mention of the Beaufighter cockpit being on display but unfortunately this has been forwarded to the Australian Aviation Museum in Darwin. The heritage centre, documenting the history of the RAAF and its links to the Riverina Region, opened in an old guardhouse in 1995 and was given a major update just over a decade ago.
Belonging to the base there’s a small collection of early jets, among them a Gloster Meteor, a CAC Cabre, an English Electric Canberra, a Dassault Mirage III and a General Dynamics F-111. Furthermore, once you get in the heritage museum which by the is free entry, you can learn even more about not only the planes but history of air force and some amazing facts. Just keep in mind that gift shop there only accepts cash so be mindful of that.
