I have attended Capilano University since 2014 and have been in two programs: ABE and the BAA program. Through my studies, I have found my instructors to be incredible helpful and they have always gone the extra mile through one-on-one time during coaching hours and by helping me get involved outside the classroom. The small classes sizes offer opportunity for hands on learning and lots of group work. Yes a lot of people hate the idea of group work but it is so integral to being workplace ready in business. I have seen so many peers go from being extremely anxious and shy in groups in first year to being strong communicators by third year, if they hadn't had that opportunity they would have been struggle to communicate with a variety of diverse people upon entering the workforce.
Part of what made my experience so amazing was getting involved on campus through clubs, PD, on campus employment, and doing a field school. People like to complain that there isn't enough campus life or ways to get involved but if you put in the effort there are endless opportunities. Like with any University you get out of it what you put in to it, if you are going to rush right out of class and not talk to anyone then yes you will find University quite anti-social. That being said if you stop by a club or career fair and look at how to get plugged in you will meet incredible people and learn so much more. As part of the business program I have had opportunities to travel, present to panels of industry professionals, compete against like minded students from across Canada, make life long friends, and expand my learning through relevant jobs and volunteering.
Was doing a field school expensive? Yes, but it was something I saw as an invaluable experience and so I saved for it and would do it again in a heart beat.
Is scheduling classes a challenge? Yes and No, if you meet with an academic advisor regularly through your program you will ensure that you know what to take and that you are on track; in addition, you have to recognize what you're priority is, for me it has been school and so I have shuffled my work slightly over the years to be able to take the course load and offering I wanted.
Is the course load heavy? Well there is no straight answer to this as every course is different and every area of study and every students capacity is different. The fact is University is hard, if it wasn't challenging to get a degree there wouldn't be much value in it. That being said it's about recognizing that you're an adult and you're in charge of your academic career, if five courses is too much for you then there's nothing wrong with that but be honest with yourself and cut back. The perk of being in smaller classes is that if you're struggling go see your instructor during their office hours and they will take the time to help you through it.
All in all Capilano is an amazing school with instructors and staff that go above and beyond to help you succeed. It has grown so much in the mast few years and continues to implement new programs based on the feedback of students. I highly recommend Capilano to all my friends and have seen many peers graduate and find rewarding positions right...
Read morePretty much every thing is done wrong on their end. Hours and hours of my time have been wasted trying to get things to function normally. Initially when I applied for classes I was supposed to create a password for a school email. Neither my personal email or phone number were connected to the account, which was necessary to move forward. After countless calls and voicemails left with no reply, I finally heard back over a week after classes had already started. After getting access to the email I was shocked to find that they actually had been replying to my voicemails, just by sending emails to the account I was locked out of (about being locked out of that account). Since I hadn’t been able to check that email, I had been able to apply for the program, but not actually sign up for classes. A meeting was scheduled with somebody to get it done. While signing up, I wasn’t able to actually select anything because they had forgotten to give my account access. Instead, I was told they would do it on paper for me. After doing that, I received an email saying they accidentally signed me up for an incorrect class, then later, another email telling me that paper could not be accepted for some reason. I scheduled another zoom meeting to figure out what was going on. They gave my account access to the classes, however this time the links were broken and the classes could not be selected on the website. Another couple days went by before they figured it out. After signing up, I was told to check the schedule I had been sent previously, to see when and where I would have each one. There was no schedule in my inbox. It took days to receive one. Turned out my classes were all self paced and online, so there had been no need for that to start. I had not been made aware of this. Recently, a new layer of security had been added, Microsoft Authenticator, which would load and load until it timed out, making my classes inaccessible, same for my email. I tried calling during hours when the university was definitely open and the automatic system sent me in loops until finally getting to the point where I thought I would speak to somebody, only to tell me the university is closed. I feel as though I’m leaving out even more things that happened but this is all I can remember at the moment. I can not believe a university would be so unorganized and unprofessional. Truly a disgrace to the Canadian education system. If I could, I would give it a rating of 0 stars. I would never recommend anybody who works hard, values their time, and has high expectations of themself, as it is pretty clear that the people working here do not feel the same....

classes 3/5: small classes (better for the student to communicate with teachers). not enough offered for the amount of students they accept which shows their greed.
teachers (n/a): hit or miss at every school, most are good, watch out for some and use ratemyprof to be extra sure
staff (not teachers) 1/5: the staff here are nothing but impatient, mean, and overall give the absolute worst service when it comes to helping, half of them don’t even acknowledge your issue as you as try to explain and ask you to email (which takes forever to reply to)
food -10/5: there is practically no food besides a tim hortons and subway. the cafeteria is run by chartwells (THEY LITERALLY MAKE PRISON FOOD)(google it im not lying) I had an AWFUL AWFUL EXPERIENCE at the dorms and on campus. if you want bland, RAW (been served raw chicken 3 times and havent been back to eat it) and overall bagged frozen food, eat by all means.
dorms 1/5: my god are the dorms so badly run and managed, dirty and nasty your whole semester and room service (if something is broken) is done by 1 person for all three buildings (dont even bother asking). AGAIN THE FOOD IS SO BAD pretty much everyone that has been there has had one raw chicken experience.
campus 2/5: really embarrassing to call yourself a university with what clubs, events, and lounges are offered and they are awful and uninteresting. the campus is pretty clean and its really calm to be near so many trees so bonus points. library is also nice but very very packed all the time so good luck finding a seat.
bookstore: the lady that runs this store is the most RACIST person ive meet. im brown by color but I am born in Canada and have no accent. without even saying a word im met with a eyeroll and a “what do you want now?” response. how i know its racist is because the white person infront of me was treated with smiles and good service. (why did i get a 180 in...
