We are all close to 70 years old and in our own homes, one in Lunenburg and the other on the Northumberland Strait. As beautiful as the Summerville view is, it was not the primary draw.

We met, as we do every year, to celebrate shared birthdays. The rate, which came to roughly $400 a night would imply that the property was comfortable, clean, and furnished with quality and comfort in mind.

By that I mean; good quality appliances, dishes, towels, knives, a place to sit and dine…all the things that one would expect at the rate charged. Quality toilet paper; a refrigerator that has shelves on the door; hooks on which to hang damp towels; blinds on all the windows; careful repairs; good knives (unchipped); knobs on the cabinets etc.

Repairs were done haphazardly. The cheap screens were taped to secure against drafts and/or summer insects and was peeling away from the frame. The toilet paper dispensers were shabby and cheap, falling off the walls which displayed unpainted poly filler. Rusty corrosion spotted them.

We had to squeeze side-by-side at the raised kitchen counter in order to dine and that our view was the kitchen with our used cookware and a window that featured roadside power lines.

When we texted to inquire about these things the only response was pushback and the repeated statement that we received what we saw in the pictures. Somethings cannot be communicated in pictures. The smell of smoke from the basement, for example, can’t be photographed.

We were offered a different property but were disappointed that the “offer”of the other property was withdrawn almost immediately.

Burnt-out lightbulbs were not replaced. Cooking in the kitchen with no lights except for the very dim basket hanging lamps with ksubstandard cooking tools was beyond frustrating, and, in fact, dangerous. To be told repeatedly to continue to try another switch verged on insulting. One of our party is a retired radiation oncologist who is well accustomed to understanding and overseeing multi-million dollar medical equipment. My tendency is to believe her when she suggests a bulb is burnt-out.

The refrigerator was very small with no shelves on the door and not sufficient room to store ingredients for five meals.

The large bathroom was a shared utility with access from each bedrooms. The doors were opaque glass. There was no sense of privacy when using this facility. The second bathroom was barely a powder room, again with the toilet roll in the process of detaching from the wall.

One of our party has a significant spinal injury which makes walking difficult. One would have expected that the caretaker would have been there in the morning to clear the steps of slushy snow.

In one of the less than flattering online reviews, the hosts responded by suggesting that had the guests only communicated the problems, they would have been able to rectify them. We did communicate many times only to receive total push back. For the daily rate, one would expect a response like this: what can we do to fix this?

To expect guests to strip the beds and sort the recycling is not on. This is the housekeeper’s job, as is the folding and storing of towels which we found in the dryer in the basement.

$400 a night? Mid-winter, with the outdoor facilities inaccessible (barbecue and hot tub) therefore unusable? Expectations are raised when taking this into consideration. What one does not expect is: a money-grab; complete disregard to our concerns; cheap renovation; uncomfortable living and dining arrangements; substandard equipment.

Shameful....

When booking you are required to pay full price for your stay upon booking. There are no refunds after 48 hours. We booked our stay in February, 2025. My husband and I reserved 2 cottages, one for us & one for my sister & her husband. The rate was almost $500 per night, per cottage. We booked a 2 night stay. Unfortunately due to the Air Canada strike they were unable to fly from Toronto to Halifax. Because if this and the no refund policy, we lost the $948.00 paid for one of the cottages. If you are a senior and are visiting with a friend or spouse, who may have some mobility issues, there are also a few things to be aware of: The bed is extremely low to the floor in Unit #2, Designer Oceanfront Villa. Additionally the mattress is a foam mattress & not comfortable. There is a fixed mounted ladder at the end of the bed that gives access to an extremely small loft. In order to get in & out of the bed it is difficult because the bed is too close to the wall and you have to maneuver around the ladder. The bed in Unit #1, Tiny Oceanfront Retreat is in a room so small, access to the bed is on one side only and the space between the bed & wall is only 12". The picture on the website for Unit #1, shows a pergola over the outside seating area on the large deck. When we arrived we noticed it was no longer there. It would have provided some shade in the afternoon from the sun. 2 very tiny umbrellas, providing shade for 1 person each, are provided but they must be moved around to maintain the shade. The bathroom sink in both cottages is extremely tiny. On the plus side: the cottages have lovely kitchens with everything necessary (cutlery, dishes pots, kettle, toaster, fridge, stove, etc.) The sitting room area is comfortable enough with TV available. Internet access is also provided. There is a firepit at the back of the cottages, but Nova Scotia is under a no fire ban due to dry weather and could not be used. The ocean views from the very large deck are gorgeous. If there was some type of shade from the afternoon sun it would have been more enjoyable. There is a sauna, hot tub & propane BBQ at each cottage. We would not stay there again and would not recommend it to any of our friends. This 2 star rating is based on: a) the no refund policy after 48 hours, b) the very uncomfortable bed situation in Unit #2, c) lack of any type of adequate shade. Next time I would book an oceanfront cottage at the White Point resort. The rates are less expensive and they have a refund policy if you can't make the trip due to unforeseen circumstances. And they are...

I was recently married at Sidanna and I could not be happier with our experience! Let’s start with the bad news, a hurricane was headed our way for wedding weekend. Fortunately it was downgraded to a post-tropical storm. Also fortunately we were getting married at Sidanna! We and our guests were able to ride out the worst of the storm cozy in our accommodations, watching the waves crash from the domes, and warming up in the saunas when we felt like a little extra luxury. All of our guests commented on how beautiful their accommodations were and how much they enjoyed the amenities offered to them.

Although typically the staff would set up for your event before you arrived they were unable to set up before we checked in because we had to batten down the hatches for the storm. Wedding morning they were prompt and professional, moving things into place and communicating effortlessly with my team who were working to decorate and get things set up for the ceremony.

Sidanna goes above and beyond to meet all your needs and they include a long list of resources for your big day. This includes beautiful teak tables and chairs for your ceremony and reception as well as lounge chairs and outdoor furniture for relaxing by the pool, creating cozy nooks for guests to enjoy the view and step away from the party for a moment. Rounding out the teak furniture they include a small bar and an arch. They also include all tableware including napkins, glasses, plates and cutlery. Going above and beyond they also brought in a portable bathroom which was easy to access and clean!

At every opportunity the Sidanna staff made the extra effort to congratulate myself and my husband, ask how we were doing, assist us with any issues that arose and ease our stay. From the moment we checked in until we packed out, we were taken care of and supported by everyone we encountered.

And Priyanka is a dream. Throughout the entire planning process she was attentive, generous, forthcoming and responsive. She always made herself available, answered questions promptly and provided a list of quality vendors to help us with our plans. She has the perfect balance that every bride dreams of, a vendor that keeps in touch, provides regular updates, is uplifting and still manages not to be overwhelming.

We are so grateful we had the opportunity to host our big day at Sidanna. If you are on the fence, jump off! You won’t regret the time you spend there, no matter what the occasion, or...

I recently spent three wonderful days at Sidanna Retreat in Sugar Loaf, Cape Breton, and it was an unforgettable experience! The oceanfront cottage is absolutely stunning, offering breathtaking views. The amenities and decor were top-notch. We loved spending time in the sauna, swimming pool, and hot tub, which were all impeccably maintained. It was the perfect way to relax and unwind while enjoying the serene surroundings. The hiking trails nearby were another highlight of our stay. Each trail offered amazing views, allowing us to fully immerse ourselves in the natural beauty of Cape Breton. The cottage itself was cozy, comfortable, and well-equipped with everything we needed. The attention to detail and the warm hospitality made our stay even more special. I highly recommend Sidanna Retreat to anyone looking for a peaceful and luxurious getaway. We can't wait to come back!

I had the please of staying at the mystical beach chalet with my partner and his parents. We absolutely loved our stay - it has everything you can think of and more. The amenities (hot tub, sauna, etc) are all great for relaxing and the entire a-frame is brand new and high quality with its furnishings. The location is my most favourite - the Cape Breton highlands are stunning and the beach is just steps away with a secret waterfall that empties into the ocean. I couldn’t go on and on about how perfect this place is. Highly recommend at least a week.
