I stopped at Steve Marshman’s shortly before they closed at 5pm today. I brought in some jewelry to be either appraised or sold. One ring in particular is quite unique in style, I no longer had any paperwork and had never had it appraised. When it was purchased, we were told it was a 1 karat, princess cut diamond, surrounded by smaller diamonds, totalling approx 1.25 karats of diamonds on a 14k gold band. It’s a beautiful ring, but because of its unique style and larger size, it could potentially take quite some time for it to be sold from the store. Due to this, the offer that Steve Marshman’s had made was lower than its actual value - which is completely understandable and fair. He was very honest with me and was hesitant to tell me the offer in case I was insulted by it. To the contrary, I was actually impressed. He gave me a very fair offer given the uniqueness of the ring, told me honestly that his offer is low, mentioned a potential ballpark value at $8,000 (this was not an appraisal or an estimate), and said that if I got an actual appraisal, I would do much better selling it on my own. I traded in 3 smaller rings that were not worth much financially or sentimentally, and they more than paid to have my ring and diamond hoop earrings appraised. I will absolutely be a customer for life. Truly good and honest service is often hard to find, but I received nothing but the best (despite the fact that I arrived 10 minutes before closing and didn’t finish for another 40 minutes). Prior to stopping at Steve Marshman’s, I stopped at a well-known local pawn shop. I was asked if I knew anything about the ring - to which I said that I did not - and so I was offered $350 for the ring that was later ball-parked at $8,000. I was shocked, as I knew the value was much higher. What I didn’t tell the pawn shop or Steve Marshman’s until the end was that the ring was initially purchased in auction, it was valued at $10,000. I didn’t know how accurate it was, but I knew it was worth a hell of a lot more than $350. Thank-you to everyone at Steve Marshman’s. I will be a...
Read moreSteve and his staff are very personable, but that is where my good experience ends. My fiance purchased my ring and I only wore it one day after he proposed as we were down south. The ring kept catching on everything and kept having threads stuck underneath. The centre sapphire stone was able to spin within the claws. We took it back after we got back asking them to fix the claws and have them resize the ring. I also had them resize another ring and fix the claws on those rings as well... at their suggestion. When I went back to pick up the rings I was happy with how the rings looked. It wasn't very long after when I realized the engagement ring was still catching threads on sweaters, towels etc. I reluctantly went back and was told that the claws were normal. Who am I to question an expert. My other ring under much closer observation had gold on the sapphire stone by all four claws. Under more research I read up on the method of the fix. To me it looks like sloppy work. Getting flux(?)on fine jewelry is a shame. We were also promised an appraisal with the engagement set as well which we never got. I was wearing my ring set one day and went into another well experienced jeweler to ask his opinion. He gave me a magnifying glass to look for myself and there was one claw that wasn't even on the stone. That was why it kept catching threads. He said I should get Steve to fix it. But after returning several times to be told by a professional that this is normal I do not feel comfortable. I will not be back. So after purchasing the set, and getting my claws on my other set 'fixed', I now have to take it to another jeweler and have them fix...
Read moreI took my brand new engagement ring in to have sizing beads put in as it was top heavy. Somehow Steve himself talked out of what I wanted, and told a half a size down would suffice. My ring was Gone for 3 weeks, which is fine. But oddly enough the day I called to inquire about it, it was coincidentally ready. My fiancée picked it up for me after $128 and change, to bring it home and still the same issue. I immediately took it back the next day, where we spent 20 minutes still trying to talk me out of the sizing beads. He went to the back and bent the bottom as he believed that would fix the problem. Of course it did not. He then agreed tried to put a rubber coil on the inside, which I told him that I’m not here to live with something like that on my ring forever. To even insinuate such, is ridiculous! He then agreed to put in “medium” sizing beads, so that was another $39 and change charge. A week later my ring was ready, I picked it up and these are anything but “medium” sizing beads put in and my band is still bent from what he tried when I went back. I was too frustrated and upset to say anything, i told them it was fine and left. Based on the first visit, they didn’t listen to what I wanted to begin with. I have never known a jeweller to charge so much for sizing beads, even after the fact they didn’t listen to me in the first place. And I don’t believe these are medium sizing beads. If they are, I hate to see what the small looks like. Needless to say, I can’t even stand wearing the ring and DONT even know what to do now or where to go now! DONT recommend this place. But do admit his advertising works, which is how I ended up there in the...
