The Magellan Strait Area is a navigable sea route separating mainland South America to the north and Tierra del Fuego to the South. It is one of the most important natural passage and acting as a sheltered link between the Pacific and the Atlantic Oceans. when entering from the Atlantic, pilots boards at BAHIA POSESION pilot station ( VHF ch- 16,13,68). Report to Punta deldada VTS when abeam Punta Dungenes Lt on Ch-16 ( 52 23.7 S/ 068 25.8 W). The entry into the strait is marked with recommend route. There is no draft restriction and sufficient deprhs available throughout. The pilotage is offered till Bahia felix and if vessel requires more sheltered passage they can request for additional pilotage till ANKUD p/s.(41 46.3 S, 073 51.1 W) 2 Experience pilots from chillian Navy will under take the pilotage. Distance from Bahia Posesion- Ankud P/S is 1080 NM. Depending on the convince both the pilots either get down at ANKUD or will sail till the Chilian Port. When the departure and arrival ports of vessel are foreign ports, i.e other than Chilian ports, there is no requirement of the pilot to transit Magellen strait, except for the 2 narrows between Possecion and Punta Arenas.
