It's an OK beach. The water is clean but not very clear. The area is fairly small and the view is not as nice as at some other beaches. In July, even on a Tuesday around noon it was still pretty crowded. I think we went too late. And at this time of year, it's actually not refreshing to go swimming close to the beach because the water here is shallow and quite warm.
There is another little rocky bay that you could climb to just to the left of the walkway when you get off the boat. It's obviously not as safe, but a few people went there to swim away from the crowds.
The round-trip boats from Sai Kung pier cost $40. For some companies (Wah Kee/red banner, for one), if you have 2+ people, you may be able to negotiate on price. It's a comfortable ride with some nice views.
You can also consider getting off at Sharp Island instead, where there is also a stretch of beach (not sure whether it's gazetted/lifeguarded). On the way back, we saw it was much less crowded than...

The hike might be a little challenging for beginners especially on a sunny day as there are a lot of stairs at the start. But it gets better when you are near the beach. There are food options here like cup noodles, snacks and drinks. You will need to pay $120 and $100 deposit to loan the umbrella. There are two platforms on the sea to be on and enjoy the scene out in the sea. The pier is only a 5 mins away...
