The Shanghai Metro is very convenient for use even by tourists who doesn’t know the Chinese Language.
Get a ticket from the ticket dispensing machine and touch English language. Touch on your destination and the number of tickets to purchase and insert either coins or notes. The fare is very cheap compared to Hong Kong’s MTR. An hour’s ride cost me RMB6 or approx AUD1.30 or approx USD0.85.
Touch the ticket onto the entrance turnstile and upon exit feed the ticket into the exit turnstile. The ticket doesn’t get wasted but gets recycled, how awesome!
There is ample standing as well as sitting room but as with all public transportation, ride during off peak would be less of a hassle.
The network is extensive and some area are accessible by more than one Metro route. Greatest thing on the Metro is you avoid the peak hour traffic jam on the road.
The station announcements in the Metro are in both Chinese and English.
The key is to know the station name at your destination which will make the whole journey very easy.
