The newest hidden secret in Medellín - Colombia Coffee Tour!
If you are looking for a non-touristy special coffee farm experience in Medellín but think that other tour group prices are ridiculous, you have found the right place! This tour is easily 30€ cheaper than that Toucan Sam guide, and this one is private. They come and pick you up at your hotel (if in the vicinity of their pick up area), provide you with drinks and snacks, and a tour in English and Spanish.
You begin the tour in the morning with a brief history about the history and discovery of coffee on the drive to the coffee farm. The coffee farm is located about 25 minutes outside of the city on the mountains above the city center. The coffee farm is organic, only producing high quality. Here you will learn about the growth period, the different life phases of the coffee plant and bean, the harvest and preparation processes (cleaning, dehulling, drying, etc.) Afterward, you will enjoy a coffee from the actual coffee produced at the farm.
Afterward, during the drive to the coffee laboratory, you will learn more about the consumption of coffee around the world, more history, and Colombia’s past and present coffee production. You will travel to a coffee laboratory to see the different phases of producing coffee like de-shelling the green coffee, size separations, quality controls, roasting, and packaging. After this tour, you will then learn about the process in determining the profile of different coffees.
Afterward, you will see the different types of brewing types, receive an explanation about how to brew coffee and which process is best for which type of coffee, and then proceed with a coffee tasting. It is similar to a wine tasting as you will smell, taste and then try to describe what you taste.
You are able to purchase coffee at the coffee laboratory and also at the coffee farm. The tour guides are so incredibly friendly and nice. If you don’t speak Spanish, there is also an English guide available. She is an English teacher, so her English is perfect.
If you don’t want that tourist tour of, here is a coffee tour and take a picture of yourself planting a coffee plant, and actually want to learn about the entire lifecycle of coffee from seed to consumption, this is the perfect tour.
Tours are normally limited to one per day, and as they are private, you must reserve in advance. The tour is paid in cash, but if you want to purchase coffee at the coffee laboratory, you can pay with credit card.
Honestly, I could have not chosen a better coffee farm experience. Don’t make a mistake and regret booking some over priced tour with some other company, come here! You will remember this experience for the rest of your life.
Warning: make sure you dress appropriately, meaning long pants and good shoes (tennis or hiking shoes are even better) as you will be going on a farm that make be a bit slippery due to rain. If you are sun sensitive, bring sunscreen. I do not advise this tour for older people as the walking part is not always on paved walkways and is sometimes uneven...
Read moreColombia Coffee Tour was amazing from start to finish! Our guides were very knowledgeable, personable, and were so much fun to spend the day with! My husband and I love coffee, but we learned so much more about the history, farming, and production than we’ve ever learned from roasters tours in the states.
The tour started with them picking us up right from our Airbnb in el poblado and then to the coffee plantation (finca) that is located right in the foothills outside of the city. We got a very comprehensive tour of the estate and learned about the history of the coffee bean, the specific plantation we were on, the coffee plant, and the culture of coffee production and research in Colombia. We then got to taste and purchase some of the coffee and beans.
Next, we were able to visit the coffee lab which is where a lot of the small fincas send their beans to be tested, roasted, and bagged. We were able to do a coffee tasting there to compare different roasts, quality of beans, and mechanisms to brew the coffee.
All in all, one of the highlights of our trip to Medellin! Would highly recommend to everyone whether you like coffee or not as it is such an integral part of Medellin and Colombia’s culture...
Read moreHad a spectacular time with the Colombia Coffee Tour team! My significant other booked the tour with minimal input from me, and I was very impressed with her finding. I’m one of the coffee roasters at the cafe I work at in the United States, and I was able to learn a lot of new information on the coffee farming process and roasting process. I really enjoyed that the coffee plants were planted naturally on the grounds of a monastery rather than the typical large commercial type of plantation. There’s a lot of flora and fauna to observe while on the grounds. I suggest wearing long sleeves and pants when on the tour since you will literally be pushing coffee tree branches out of the way walking around. They also demonstrate a complete roast at the roastery, Urbania, which was neat to observe as a fellow roaster. The barista did a great job demonstrating French press, Chemex, and V60. We even tried a brew of Gesha coffee that was grown at the monastery, and it...
