Medvedgrad Castle is an amazing place full of history located in the mountains at the north of Zagreb, easily accesible after a 1-hour walk from the penultimate stop of 128 bus line, that departs from Crnomerec, or if you are a bit lazy, bus line 140 leaves you at stop Put za Medvedgrad, 15 minutes away from the place... Castle was build about 8 centuries ago with defensive purposes, but the most known story is the one of Crna Kraljica, the "Black Queen", a historic character modified by black legends, supposedly very cruel... Castle is closed right now due to maintenance works, but in any case, re-opening will take place presumably this year. A Events of various classes were held at the castle in former years. A modern monument dedicated to those fallen in the Independence War, Oltar Domovine, is located behind the observation tower of the castle. In a clear day, you can get a wonderful view of Zagreb and the surrounding mountains. The large communications and broadcast tower of Slijeme can be clearly seen from the castle, it's an additional 2-hour walk to get there. Don't miss the adjacent Queen's Well, a quietful place 15 minutes away from the castle, almost in front of the...

A lot of reviews for this site should actually be for the castle itself, not this small memorial area that is located within the castle grounds. It is a simple memorial design but is unique and obviously has meaning to the people of Croatia and...
