Grotte de Pech Merle — Local services in Cahors

Visiting the cave itself was awesome, and the museum on site is an excellent resource. However I was disappointed in the manner of the guided tour. Firstly, there were too many people in the group, and thus not everyone could see what was being discussed at the same time. I am bilingual and comprehend french fairly well, but the guide seemed more interested in being entertaining than informative. We were given small ear speakers which enable the guide to speak conversationally into a microphone, and the conversation was fast and thus unnecessarily difficult for a non native speaker to follow. I soon gave up and took the earpiece off. I've been to Grotte Font-de- Gaume and Lascaux, and the guides there are more interested in communication than getting laughs from the audience. A wonderful experience. The drawings are amazing and there are also some fantastic natural features such as stalactites and stalagmites. Our English language guide was excellent, giving clear explanations and adapting to his audience, many of whom understood English as a second language. The museum alongside the grotto is well done and there is a good film explaining additional features that can't be visited, the timeline and posing interpretations of the reasons for for drawings. ♿ Sadly, not suitable for mobility restricted visitors as there are a lot of steps and...

Je ne m y étais pas pris suffisamment tôt pour réserver à fond de gaume, sur conseil d un ami j ai réservé Pêch Merle (Oui pensez à réserver votre visite en amont pour visiter ce fabuleux endroit.) Un trésor d art parietal vous attend là-bas, attention pas un fac similé comme a lascaux ou certains tableaux dans certains musées, non les vrais dessins vieux de plus de 20 000 ans! De plus Gilles nous a rendu la visite de la grotte vivante et a su nous transmettre une émotion au fil des découvertes des dessins et toujours avec des explications très claires. Pour ne rien gâcher cette grotte possède également des trésors de concrétions. Bref une épopée d une heure a une autre époque entre 1922 sur les pas de André David et la préhistoire à 30m sous terre. Seul regret mais compréhensible pour la conservation des peintures l interdiction de prendre des photos a l intérieur de la grotte. Il y a deux parkings, un musée de la préhistoire très riches en informations et un petit film bien fait qui complètent la grotte. Il y a des toilettes et une boutique de souvenirs ainsi qu une buvette. Le prix est très raisonnable. A faire absolument ! Et pourquoi pas embrayer avec une visite de saint cirq lapopie joli village voisin...
