The actual cave town is magnificent and it’s definitely worth a visit. The landscape is breathtaking.

TIPS: Take the little free bus shuttle to the start of the cave’s instead of walking up the road, you will get plenty of exercise climbing all the stairs and it saves time spent in the heat. Bring water and hats if visiting in summer and comfy shoes.

ATTENTION VARDZIA MANAGEMENT: 2 Things really bothered me while visiting and I’m hoping someone from Vardzia reads this: We had to pay 1 lari each for use of bathroom as well as the general entrance fee. All 3 taps were broken and the water was running out of the taps without being able to stop it. It was running when I entered and had to leave it running. All taps are split by the faucet and by the pipes. Also the bathroom doors would not close in the ladies.

There is an unstable person demanding money from us for parking when we left the parking area, not anywhere close to where we parked, rather blocking the road as we tried to leave and pressuring us to pay for free parking. This...

Only for the fit person. A lot of climbing and steep decents. A fair bit of scambling to get to the very best parts where there were very few people due to it being a very awkward ascent. Loved the drive to and from here from Akhaltsikhe. Absolutely beautiful. So nice to see all the farm animals in the valleys and surrounds, and I really enjoyed all the smells, farm animals, ozone, rain. Such a good trip, and well worth taking the 90 to over 100mph marshrukta bus. 1.5 hours if at a fast pace to really enjoy rambling around is required. Been to caves around the world as am a huge fan. Even though its not similar, reminds me...

Definitely worth visiting, make sure to see the spring next to the church of assumption of Mary, and the tunnel, there are lots of dwellings to explore if you visit alone. The tunnel has three parts that are covered, the rest is exposed stairs.

Costs 15 GEL adults, 1 GEL school children. The toilet costs 1 GEL but the lady who is in charge may not even accept the money and let you go in free. The shop at the entrance has almost everything and the ice cream too. You can take a local guide too.

Overall the maximum time you can spend is about...

Visited as a group of women holidaying in Georgia and one of the places on the list was Vardzia Cavetown. We took a shuttle to the base and then started our climb, everything went well until I realised I will be walking through a cave. It's a tiny lane so have the fast one go ahead and the slow ones behind as you don't want to get stuck in a tight space. Our guide helped us through. Interesting to see how the cave turned into a fortress and a housing but now monks live in a small part where no one is allowed. Tears of Queen Tamara is an interesting story.
