Be careful with visiting caves in Guatamala! My boyfriend and I became very sick about 12 days after our visit to the caves with high fever, chest pain, coughing and severe headaches. After a lot of tests in the hospital the doctors discovered we were infected with histoplasmosis (a severe fungal infection which you can get from breathing in the spores of bird and bat droppings, especially prevalent in caves in central america). During the tour the guide took some guano from the walls and used it to make stripes on our face, which probably resulted in breathing in a lot of spores and therefore a more severe infection. Luckily we recovered after a month, but the disease is fatal when you have a weak immune system and are not given the proper antifungal treatment in time. Ask your doctor to test for histoplasmosis when you develop symptoms after your visit, in Europe it is still a relative unknown disease and therefore often...
Read moreAn extremely fun adventure, My friend and I did the cave tour. We dint know what to expect but was pleasantly surprised by the whole activity. You would be needing a pair of good water shoe or Chacos/ Teva will do the job. Be conscious of your foot placement at all times as the rocks are pretty sharp and you could have a bleeding toe. The whole activity took few hours depending on the size of the group. The tour guide gave us each a Candle and it helped navigating the dark caves. Be prepared to get wet as you go through different parts of the Caves. It was altogether a new experience for us. 10/10 recommend doing this tour. There is a waterfall very close to the Caves. Be sure to take a 5min hike to this...
Read moreThis cave is one of the most boring caves I have seen in my life. Nothing to see, and even if there were, you wouldn’t see it, because all you get to light up your way is a candlelight. You can barely see where you’re stepping, let alone anything else. Not only it’s ruining the environment of the cave, but it’s also adding difficulty to an already unnecessarily dangerous experience. They don’t provide electric lights/helmets or any caving safety gear just for the sake of raising the adrenaline. You just end up stumbling in the dark for one hour, with sometimes 30 people lining up behind you, seeing nothing. There are thousands of better caves out there in the world… this one is not worth any second...
