Delhi Gate. 28 December 2021. I have paraphrased the information given at the Mandu Tourism, Sarmaya, British Library, Wikipedia and ASI websites and added my thoughts about Delhi Gate at Mandu. This has been done with the aim of not only giving historical information but also making it more interesting to read. (I hope 😊) Delhi gate was built by Hoshang Shah between 1405 and 1407. There were five arches with beautiful engravings. Each arch had superstructures may be rooms as well. The passage between the arches was covered and most probably had, viewing galleries, rooms/quarters for the guards or put to other uses. Delhi Gate has a very wide cobbled stone approach path. It is so wide that as per our guide Rajesh, six elephants could walk abreast during the royal processions. It was used by the royals and was considered as the most important gate of Mandu Fort, so much so that its picture even finds a place in Akbar Nama. In its heydays, Delhi gate must have presented a grand sight. Because of its importance and strategic locations, this was also the gate that had to bear the brunt of all major attacks and assaults. Sadly, today Delhi Gate lies in ruins. Out of the five, only three arches are standing. Other than the buttresses supporting them there is no trace of two arches. There is no trace of covered passages. Today the path and passages between the arches are open to skies. Superstructures of all the remaining three arches are also missing. There is only the outermost gate where only partial superstructure of the arch remains without the supporting walls and the roof. Even today, Delhi Gate is an attraction for the tourist not only because even in ruins it still presents a grand spectacle but also because of the amazing view of the valley and surrounding environs from the ramparts of the gate. From here one can have a very good view of the Alamgir gate and present-day Dhar – Mandav road. During our visit, we found that a newly married couple had selected Delhi Gate for their wedding photoshoot. For this, drones, video and a few still cameras were being used. Wishing them a happy married life. Overall, it was a...

The massive gateway consisted of several archways combined with guard house and watch towers probably ferved as a royal entry gateway for the Delhi Sultans and the Mughals. The gateway was used by the royals by bypassing the Kamani and Gadi Darwaza. Still today a series of steps leads to the Delhi gate from the north side. Today the gateway is approached by a flight of stairs and although large portions of it have collapsed, it still has a...
